Jimmy Kimmel’s Expectant Widow Swipe at Melania Trump Was Just the Start
Days before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Jimmy Kimmel joked that first lady Melania Trump had a glow like an expectant widow — a line that ignited backlash and looked even worse after shots were fired during Saturday’s event.
Jimmy Kimmel made a sharp joke about Melania Trump right before the White House Correspondents Dinner, and then the weekend went sideways in a way that made the bit look a lot worse in hindsight. Now Melania, Donald Trump, and the White House are all swinging back.
The joke that lit the match
On the Thursday, April 23 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel ran a mock version of the correspondents dinner and took aim at the first lady.
Our first lady Melania is here. So beautiful, Mrs. Trump you have a glow like an expectant widow.
He kept going, riffing that she celebrates her birthday at home by staring out the window and whispering, 'What have I done?' and jokingly 'introduced' the couple like they barely knew each other: 'Melania, this is Donald. Donald, this is Melania.'
Then the weekend happened
Two days later, on Saturday, April 25, shots were fired during the White House Correspondents Dinner. Secret Service rushed President Donald Trump off stage. Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Allen and said he had a shotgun, a .38-caliber pistol, and several knives. He was apprehended at the scene.
Hours later, speaking from the White House, Trump said it had been traumatic for the first lady and vowed they were not going to let anyone take over society or cancel things. The timing of Kimmel's bit suddenly became part of the story.
The fallout on Monday
- Melania Trump responds (April 27): Melania posted a statement on X blasting Kimmel's monologue as corrosive and divisive, arguing that this was not comedy and that ABC enables him. She urged the network to finally take a stand.
Kimmel's hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn't comedy — his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.
- Donald Trump piles on (April 27): On Truth Social, Trump knocked Kimmel as not funny and claimed the host aired a fake video that made it look like Melania and Barron were in his studio. He quoted the 'expectant widow' line, tied it to the very next day's security scare at the dinner, and said the suspect entered the ballroom armed with multiple weapons for an obvious and sinister reason. He said many people saw Kimmel's joke as a call to violence and called for Disney and ABC to fire him immediately.
- The White House weighs in (April 27): Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said parts of the would-be assassin's manifesto echoed rhetoric heard too often and needed to stop. She called Kimmel's comments about Melania 'disgusting,' said the first lady was anything but glowing during the ordeal, and argued that when high-profile voices keep talking this way, unstable listeners can be pushed toward violence.
The bigger picture
Kimmel shot a standard-issue awards-show zinger that instantly curdled after an actual security incident at the dinner. Fair or not, the joke is now evidence in a bigger fight over tone and responsibility in political comedy. Requests for comment have been sent to Kimmel's reps and ABC; we will see if either of them engages beyond the monologue.
