Another installment in the adventures of the Winchester brothers is only a matter of time!

Summary

  • Jared Padalecki has spoken out about his desire for a Supernatural reboot.
  • He and Jensen Ackles are willing to participate, but only if it's a Gilmore Girls-style miniseries.
  • SPN creator Eric Kripke is also in favor of a revival, but first we have to wait for Padalecki's appearance in another show.

It's been an incredible 19 years since Supernatural premiered. In that time, the adventure series with horror elements has become a second home for many of us (as crazy as it is to write that). Millions of fans still can't forget how they felt when they first watched the episodes, how they closed their eyes in horror in the early seasons, how they laughed at the Winchesters' jokes, how they worried about Dean's impending fate in Hell, and how they cried at the characters' deaths in the finale.

And even though the final episode of Supernatural provided a definitive conclusion, viewers would love to see the Winchester brothers again, if only for a little while. The actors themselves have repeatedly expressed their desire to return to the project, but they needed a break from the show that took up 15 years of their lives.

Now, according to Jared Padalecki, he and Jensen Ackles are more than excited to be a part of a potential Supernatural reboot.

Jared Padalecki Dreams of a Limited Supernatural Reboot

Jared gained widespread fame after appearing on Gilmore Girls, where he played Dean Forester. In 2016, a four-episode revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, was released. Although it was an unofficial eighth season, original showrunners Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino created more of a sweet, nostalgic mini-project without committing to follow-ups.

Recently, Padalecki and his wife Genevieve participated in the I've Never Said This Before podcast with Tommy DiDario. When asked about SPN's return to our screens, the actor was very enthusiastic about the idea. Only he's ready for a Gilmore Girls-style reboot, not a full season. Read his full statement below:

'I will say this. I don't want to do another 15 years of Supernatural. I don't want to do another 5 years of Supernatural, I am dying to do a reboot of Supernatural. Akin to the Gilmore Girls reboot. Here are four one-and-a-half-hour episodes. We'll shoot it in three months. I think Jensen [Ackles] and I both said in 2020, "We'd love to revisit these characters, this world. Give us five years." Which is next year. And I see him often. And we talk often. I think he and I are both really eager to do it. I'm certain I'll put the flannel on again and play Sam Winchester.'

Does That Mean a Reboot Will Definitely Happen?

Padalecki and Ackles are not the only ones who have expressed interest. Previously, Rob Benedict and Misha Collins also voiced their desire to return to SPN. What's more, original series creator Eric Kripke, who left the show after Season 5 (but stayed on as a supervising producer through the finale), has said he would welcome a reboot if fresh ideas were brought to the table:

'Of course, I'd want to see it. Whether I'm a part of it depends on, could I find something fresh about it that I have never seen before? Obviously, I've told a lot of those stories, but if there was something out there that really surprised me, I love that universe, and I'd be interested in looking at that. It's tricky to find what story in that universe hasn't been told, but if someone can find one, I'm all in, baby.'

By the way, fans can expect Padalecki not only in the Supernatural revival, but also in another show created by Kripke, The Boys. The show has already cast Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, Rob Benedict and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. According to Kripke, he intends to 'complete [his] game of Supernatural Pokémon' by bringing Jared Padalecki into the series as well.
