James Gunn Shuts Down Rumors About DCU Batman Script Progress
James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has clarified that the script for The Brave and the Bold, the upcoming DCU Batman film, is still in development, putting to rest speculation about its completion and a 2028 release date.
James Gunn, who leads DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, has addressed recent speculation about the highly anticipated Batman film set within the DC Universe. The project, officially titled The Brave and the Bold, is expected to be directed by Andy Muschietti, known for his work on It. This new take on the Caped Crusader will introduce Damian Wayne as Robin, a first for the big screen.
Responding to a fan's question on Threads regarding rumors that the screenplay was already finished and the movie was locked in for a 2028 premiere, Gunn was quick to set the record straight.
Fiction, sorry. Screenplay isn't finished.
His response puts to rest the swirling rumors and confirms that the film is still in the early stages of development.
Slow Progress and Few Updates
Updates on The Brave and the Bold have been few and far between, leaving fans eager for any news. Gunn himself commented last July, just before Superman 's release, that there wasn't much to share at the time.
There's really no new updates. I mean, we're working on a script. We have a screenwriter who's hammering away at it. I'm very involved, and so, you know, we'll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don't.
This statement highlights the project's ongoing development and Gunn's hands-on involvement, but also the uncertainty surrounding its timeline.
Elseworlds Batman Returns
While the DCU 's Batman is still in the works, fans won't have to wait too long to see the Dark Knight on the big screen. The Batman 2, starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves, is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. This sequel brings back Colin Farrell as the Penguin, though his role will be limited to a handful of scenes. Sebastian Stan joins the cast as Harvey Dent, and Scarlett Johansson is set to play a mysterious new character. However, this film is classified as an Elseworlds story, meaning it stands apart from the main DC Universe overseen by Gunn and Safran.
What's Next for the DCU
Looking ahead, the next major release for the DCU is Supergirl, which will mark Milly Alcock's first solo outing as Kara Zor-El. Following that, Lanterns, an HBO series centered on the Green Lantern Corps, is set to expand the universe even further. For those keeping track, there's a full slate of upcoming movies and shows planned, promising plenty of action and new faces in the years to come.
