Andy and Barbara Muschietti have sparked excitement among Stephen King fans, hinting that the IT universe may expand beyond Welcome to Derry. Their recent comments suggest Pennywise’s story is far from over, leaving the door open for future chapters.

Andy and Barbara Muschietti, the creative minds behind the IT franchise, have ignited fresh speculation about the future of Pennywise. In a recent conversation, Barbara Muschietti suggested that the saga might not wrap up with IT: Welcome to Derry, leaving fans eager for more. She shared,

We shall see. It’s a universe. It is a universe, and there are characters that are still fascinating. There are more gaps. When the great Stephen King wrote the book, I think that he left those holes on purpose…. So, I don’t know. I don’t think this is the end, basically, is all I’ll say.

With the first season of IT: Welcome to Derry now complete on HBO Max, viewers are hungry for more stories about the infamous clown. The show’s success has only fueled interest in exploring additional cycles of terror in Derry, Maine.

Stephen King’s Gaps Inspire New Stories

Barbara Muschietti pointed out that the original novel’s unexplored moments offer a treasure trove for new tales. She explained,

….I think that he left those holes on purpose. And if he didn’t do it on purpose, they’re just as great. They’re great accidents, but for us, they are a wonder. In doing the first season, of course, we uncovered a lot of holes.

IT: Welcome to Derry draws inspiration from Stephen King’s iconic novel, following a group haunted by Pennywise both as kids and adults. The series, set in 1962, serves as a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 films. Developed by Andy and Barbara Muschietti alongside Jason Fuchs, the show’s first season features eight episodes, each running about an hour. The story dives into earlier cycles of Pennywise’s reign, expanding on the brief glimpses King gave in his book.

Expanding the IT Universe

The Muschiettis have used the novel’s interludes—where previous cycles of Pennywise’s terror are only hinted at—to craft a compelling first season. Their approach has opened the door to even more stories, possibly beyond the three cycles initially planned for Welcome to Derry.

As the show continues, it’s expected to move further back in time, with each season exploring a different era of Derry’s dark history. The next season may tackle the Bradley Gang massacre, a chilling event mentioned in both the novel and the series.

Setting the Stage for a New Chapter

Welcome to Derry is poised to delve deeper into Pennywise’s origins, with each season peeling back more layers of the creature’s mysterious past. The show’s popularity on streaming platforms makes a second season likely, though nothing official has been announced yet.

Fans can look forward to more of Bill Skarsgård’s haunting portrayal and a richer exploration of the lore. The groundwork is being laid for a possible IT: Chapter 3, as the producers continue to find new angles and stories within King’s universe.
