Is Sweet Magnolias Coming Back in 2024? Season 4 Release Date Estimate

It's been almost a full year since the third season of Sweet Magnolias landed on Netflix. Unfortunately, that happened in the midst of 2023 Hollywood labor disputes, so there wasn't much hope that the new season would be released anytime soon. But in October of that year, the streaming service announced the renewal.

Filming wasn't supposed to wrap until July 2024, but the team managed to finish in June. That doesn't mean Sweet Magnolias Season 4 will be hitting our small screens anytime soon, though. Let's find out when that might happen.

Sweet Magnolias Was Not in the Lineup of 2024 Content

We know that the writers began work on the next season almost immediately after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes were resolved. As a result, many fans assumed that the production team would be able to finish work in 2024, and that Netflix would release a new season that same year.

So when the streaming service announced new and returning shows and movies in February 2024, many hoped the beloved cozy drama would be among them. More than 90 titles were announced, not a few of which were flagship Netflix projects, including Squid Game, One Piece, The Night Agent, Cobra Kai and more. Unfortunately, Sweet Magnolias was not among them, suggesting that we shouldn't expect a new season until 2025 at the earliest.

When Will Season 4 Be Released?

Nevertheless, while Netflix has yet to announce a release date for Season 4, the date is clearly getting closer as more information about the upcoming season is being revealed. Now we know that principal photography has wrapped, and Season 4 has already gone into post-production.

A season of Sweet Magnolias takes about 3-4 months to film, and with post-production, each season came out about 6-8 months after filming was completed. Season 2, for example, was filmed between April and July 2021 and released in February 2022. The third season was filmed between July and October 2022 and came out in July 2023.

So, barring any sudden external factors that could freeze the entire television industry once again, it can be assumed that Sweet Magnolias Season 4 will be released approximately 8-9 months after the completion of filming, i.e. in February or even March 2025.

And while this release window is more than realistic, we can't rule out the possibility that Netflix will decide to release the new season later, in the summer or even fall of next year. For now, all we can do is wait for the official announcement. But the new season is still on the way!

What Can We Expect from the Next Season of Sweet Magnolias?

Maddie's JoAnna Garcia Swisher teased fans of the show that Season 4 will be 'magical':

'I cannot wait for you all to see what we have been up to in Serenity. It's been a magical season…for reasons I cannot wait to share [smiling emoji].'

Additionally, as Sherryl Woods herself, the creator of the book series of the same name, pointed out, the third season of Sweet Magnolias ended without any major cliffhangers. And yet, according to her, there are many more storylines to be explored in Season 4 and beyond:

'There are many storylines that leave room for discussion — Cal and Maddie, Helen and Erik, Noreen and Jeremy, and Bill and Kathy, to name a few. There are so many things that could be done and there are so many things [where you think], "Wait, what happens next in this?" And you always hope that people are wanting more and wanting the next stage of things.'
