Ice-T Takes Command as SVU Returns After Mariska Hargitay's On-Screen Suspension
With Captain Olivia Benson out, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit plunges into a high-stakes case as Sergeant Odafin Fin Tutuola storms back for Old Friends this Thursday, May 7.
SVU is flying without its north star this week. Captain Olivia Benson is benched, Fin slides into the big chair (reluctantly), and the case they pull is messy even by SVU standards. Buckle up.
What the May 7 episode brings
The episode is titled 'Old Friends' and airs Thursday, May 7. The squad gets called to a college reunion that spirals into sexual assault territory, with conflicting stories and old secrets bubbling up the second they start asking questions. On top of that, Chief Kathryn Tynan is leaning hard on the unit from the inside, which means Fin has to keep the train on the tracks while everyone else is juggling feelings and politics.
There is a quick shot of Benson in the promo, so she is not gone the entire hour. But coming off her suspension, the vibe in the squad room is different.
Fin runs point (and he is not thrilled about it )
Fin shows up at a crime scene to find Rollins and newly reassigned Captain Renee Curry already working the room. Rollins tells him he is acting SVU supervisor while Benson is out. Fin, in classic Fin fashion, is honest about it.
'Lot going on in this place.'
'Not my idea of a good time, but here we are.'
Side note: Ice-T has said he has had less SVU screen time lately because of budget. Him steering the ship here should be a nice counter to that.
Quick who-is-where breakdown
- Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) - suspended, but does appear later in the episode
- Sergeant Odafin 'Fin' Tutuola (Ice-T) - acting SVU supervisor during Benson's suspension
- Sergeant Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) - back in the field and on this case from the jump
- Captain Renee Curry (Aimé Donna Kelly) - reassigned to SVU after a major demotion
- Chief Kathryn Tynan (Noma Dumezweni) - applying pressure on the unit while Benson is out
- ADA Dominick 'Sonny' Carisi Jr. (Peter Scanavino) - fighting the suspension in court
- Detective Jake Griffin (Corey Cott) - caught between the squad and his mentor Tynan, with family baggage about to surface
Why Benson is benched
If you missed April 30's 'Impropriety', here is the short version: Benson refused to disclose a victim's past sexual assaults while under oath, got held in contempt, and was arrested mid-proceeding. She turned in her badge and service weapon after Chief Tynan suspended her. Carisi said he would appeal.
'My duty is to protect the victim.'
'I can't and won't answer the question.'
The victim eventually chose to reveal her own history on the stand, but the damage was done as far as Tynan was concerned. Hence the suspension and the leadership shuffle.
Griffin is about to have a rough week
Corey Cott hinted that we are about to learn some uncomfortable things about Griffin's father, and that it will push Griffin to pick a side between the squad and Tynan, who has been his mentor. Translation: expect tension, and probably a choice he cannot walk back.
