How to watch the Jack Ryan movies in chronological order: five films, four actors, two reboots

The short answer

There is no single chronology, because two of the five films are reboots that start over. The workable order is the original trilogy first — The Hunt for Red October (1990), Patriot Games (1992), Clear and Present Danger (1994) — followed by the two standalone restarts in the order of the eras they're set in: The Sum of All Fears (2002), then Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014).

The five films, in that order

• The Hunt for Red October (1990) — Alec Baldwin, as a desk-bound CIA analyst pulled into the field when a Soviet captain goes off course with a stealth submarine. Adapted from Clancy's 1984 debut novel. Won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.
• Patriot Games (1992) — Harrison Ford takes over. Ryan has left the CIA to teach history at the Naval Academy, intervenes in a terrorist attack in London, and gets pulled back in when the surviving attacker comes after his family.
• Clear and Present Danger (1994) — Ford again, now acting Deputy Director of Intelligence, uncovering an off-books war against a Colombian cartel. The end of the original continuity.
• The Sum of All Fears (2002) — Ben Affleck. Reboot one: Ryan is young again, it 's the present day, and the Cold War history is gone. A nuclear device goes off at a Baltimore football stadium.
• Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) — Chris Pine. Reboot two, and the only one not adapted from a Clancy novel. A full origin story with no connection to anything before it. Kenneth Branagh directs and plays the antagonist.

The one thread holding the first three together

James Earl Jones plays Admiral James Greer in all three of the original films, which does more continuity work than the lead casting does. Ryan changes face between the first and second film with no explanation offered; Greer stays put, ages, and is diagnosed with cancer by the third.

What about the TV show and Ghost War?

Separate continuity again. John Krasinski played Ryan across four seasons of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan on Prime Video, from 2018 to 2023. Rather than a fifth season, Amazon MGM continued the story as a film: Jack Ryan: Ghost War, directed by Andrew Bernstein, running 107 minutes, released on Prime Video on May 20, 2026, with Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly returning and Sienna Miller added as an MI6 officer.

That makes Krasinski the fifth actor to play Ryan on screen, 36 years after Baldwin.

So what should you actually watch first?

Release order and story order produce nearly the same result here, so start with Red October. If you only want the version of the character with a consistent arc, the Baldwin-Ford trilogy is self-contained and stops cleanly in 1994.
