Why only eight episodes?
Season 1 had ten. Season 2 was trimmed from ten to eight during production — a late cut that pushed the Battle of the Gullet out of its finale and left that season ending on what felt like a penultimate episode. Season 3 was planned at eight from the start, and the difference shows: the season opened with its inherited battle and has drawn some of the strongest reviews in the show's run.
What comes after the finale
Season 4 will be the last — showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed the endpoint back in August 2024 — and it isn't expected until around 2028, if the show's production pace holds. Eight episodes, then a two-year wait. Standard Westeros arithmetic at this point.
