How did Mike Franks die in NCIS? The episode fans call one of the show's cruellest
Mike Franks appeared in barely a dozen episodes of NCIS, yet his death hit harder than almost any in the show's two-decade run. Gibbs' gruff mentor — played by Muse Watson from season 3 onward — went out in a way fans still argue about, 15 years later. Here's exactly how it happened.
The short answer
Franks was stabbed in the chest by Jonas Cobb — the Port-to-Port Killer, played by Kerr Smith — in the season 8 episode "Swan Song," which aired in May 2011. Cobb, a CIA-trained Navy lieutenant hunting former Navy personnel, came to Gibbs' house intending to make Gibbs his next victim. Franks intercepted him in the pouring rain, wounded him, and lost the fight.
Gibbs was in his basement mere yards away. Thunder drowned out the gunshot, and by the time he stepped outside, his mentor was dead in the street. Franks was buried with full military honors in the season finale, "Pyramid."
Why fans call it one of the cruelest
Two reasons. First, Franks was already dying — earlier in season 8, the show revealed he had terminal lung cancer, and he'd chosen to spend his remaining time doing exactly this kind of thing rather than waiting it out. Second, the man died protecting Gibbs' front door while Gibbs stood oblivious a few feet below.
Even Muse Watson thought the send-off came up short, telling NCISFanatic in an interview that a boy in the rain with a scalpel "just wasn't enough to get Mike."
The writers fought over it
The death almost didn't happen the way it did. Writer Jesse Stern revealed on the Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch podcast in 2024 that executive producer Gary Glasberg ordered the kill despite Franks not having appeared all season — and Stern pushed back hard:
"Everyone's going to see it coming. It's not the way to do it," Stern recalled telling Glasberg.
Stern lost the argument. So he wrote the episode as his own farewell to the series and deliberately built in a way for Watson to return — hence the title "Swan Song."
He never really left
That escape hatch got plenty of use. Franks kept showing up long after his death:
- "Swan Song" itself — hours after dying, Franks appears as a hallucination helping a shell-shocked Gibbs piece together what happened.
- Seasons 9–13 — "Ghost Mike" returns in episodes including "Life Before His Eyes," "The Lost Boys," the season 12 finale "Neverland," and the season 13 premiere.
- Season 15 — his final appearance on the mothership series.
- NCIS: Origins — Kyle Schmid plays young Franks in the prequel, and Watson himself made a guest appearance in a 2025 season 2 episode, briefly morphing into the older Mike.
For the record: Cobb didn't outlive his victim by much. He was shot dead in "Pyramid" — one episode later.
