Hannah Einbinder’s Heartfelt Goodbye to Hacks Tees Up the HBO Max Finale
Hannah Einbinder bids a tearful goodbye as Hacks readies its HBO Max finale, with the Emmy-winning comedy-drama taking its final bow after five seasons.
Hacks is heading for its last bow on HBO Max, with the final episode dropping May 28. Ahead of that, Hannah Einbinder posted a goodbye that reads like someone trying to keep it together while packing up a life. It is tender, specific, and yes, a little devastating if you have any attachment to this show.
Five seasons, sky-high praise, and one wildly messy duo
Across five seasons, the Emmy-winning, multiple Golden Globe-winning dark comedy basically lived at the top of the scoreboard. On Rotten Tomatoes, it hovered between 98% and 100% the whole way through. The fan base gravitated hard to the chaotic push-pull between Ava Daniels and Deborah Vance, and the show never really lost a step with critics either. So yeah, feelings are running high going into the goodbye.
Einbinder’s farewell: personal, grateful, and surprisingly revealing
In her Instagram caption, Einbinder thanked creators Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky, and Lucia Aniello while looking back on the run that started in 2021. The most surprising bit: she says she had zero acting experience before Hacks. That is not a small swing for a first-timer. What clicked, according to her, was how real Ava felt on the page. She also credits the trio behind the show with pouring their own passion, loyalty, goofiness, and emotional depth into the character.
"It’s a good representation of how we feel about each other, and of the support and love Paul, Jen, and Lucia have always shown me. I had no acting experience when I started on Hacks (sorry) - but I think the reason I could do the job was because the character they created in Ava was so real. I remember reading the audition scene and thinking damn. I wanna chill with her. She would be my best friend for sure. As I came to get to know Paul, Jen and Lucia, I realized that the qualities I loved in Ava were qualities of theirs. They’re passionate and fiercely loyal, goofy as hell, and their hearts bleed for the people they love."
The final lap
So that’s where we are: a show that came out swinging in 2021, kept its near-perfect streak, built a loyal following around a combative, co-dependent comedy duo, and now ends with its co-lead publicly thanking the people who took a chance on her when she was brand new. If you have been along for Ava and Deborah’s ride, you know this goodbye is going to land.
