Showrunner Ira Parker shares how George R.R. Martin is shaping A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the latest Game of Thrones spin-off, debuting January 18, with new ideas and creative energy.

George R.R. Martin has never been shy about voicing his opinions on adaptations of his work. While he’s expressed reservations about certain changes in House of the Dragon’s second season, his attitude toward the upcoming spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is nothing but enthusiastic, according to showrunner Ira Parker.

Parker recalls,

"George has been such a wonderful partner in this,"

during a roundtable interview. He describes spending a week in Santa Fe with Martin and a group of his favorite writers, brainstorming and developing storylines for the show’s first season. Parker notes that the sessions were full of unexpected twists and creative breakthroughs, with Martin showing genuine excitement for the new directions the team was exploring.

Bringing The Hedge Knight to Life

The new series draws its inspiration from Martin’s novella, The Hedge Knight, centering on Dunk, played by Peter Claffey, a wandering knight seeking to make his mark after his mentor’s passing. Dunk’s journey leads him to a tournament, where he crosses paths with Egg, an eager would-be squire portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell.

Parker highlights one particular moment that resonated with Martin:

"I think he really loved the idea of the Baratheon tent and meeting Lyonel Baratheon in that capacity, which was wonderful,"

he says, referencing the introduction of the bold Lord of Storm ’s End. The creative team also experimented with large-scale puppetry, inspired by discussions with Martin, opting for a style reminiscent of War Horse rather than the smaller hand puppets described in the original novella.

Martin’s Creative Influence

Parker emphasizes how valuable Martin’s involvement has been throughout the process.

"It 's such a rich creative experience, any time that you get to have him [and] can pull him away from all his other writings, so we got along very well, and he's only been a benefit to the show,"

he shares. Martin’s hands-on approach and willingness to collaborate have helped shape the series, ensuring it remains true to the spirit of his stories while introducing fresh elements for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere on January 18. Fans can keep up with the release schedule and look forward to more Game of Thrones projects currently in development.
