Netflix lights the fuse on Man on Fire next week, rebooting A. J. Quinnell’s revenge saga for TV with the action shifted to Rio de Janeiro and Marvel and DC star Yahya Abdul-Mateen stepping into a spotlight many still tie to Denzel Washington.

Netflix is about to put its own stamp on Man on Fire, and yes, it is the same John Creasy you remember from the Denzel Washington movie — but this time it is a series, it is set in Rio, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is taking the lead. Director and executive producer Steven Caple Jr. says they are already thinking beyond Season 1, as long as people show up to watch.

They are already talking Season 2 (if you watch it)

Caple Jr. told ComicBook he would happily come back for a second season and that the team has been trading ideas about where Creasy goes next. The plan is not to just march through the other A.J. Quinnell books as a roadmap. Instead, they want to drop Creasy into a fresh situation and see how he fights his way through it. He was pretty blunt that it hinges on the audience turning up, but also sounded confident there is more story to tell with this character.

'What is the next chapter with this type of character, and whether it's him saving someone or another conspiracy or something he has to unravel? I'm on board because he has his own unique way and approach and the way he deals with rage. I feel like we're going to be learning something. It's therapeutic as we sort of go on this journey with him. And I can't say I have that in the other TV shows that are out right now.'

What is different from the Tony Scott movie (and what isn't)

Caple directed the first two episodes and says the series intentionally keeps some of Tony Scott's DNA — mainly the texture. He loved how Scott shot the world in a way that felt lived-in and real, and he wanted to keep that grounded vibe so Creasy still feels like a person first, even when he does larger-than-life things.

Where the new show breaks away is how it handles Creasy's trauma. Caple talks about avoiding the most familiar beats — this is not a story that reduces him to a bottle. You will see Creasy drink, but the show steers clear of making addiction the main lens. Instead, they built a specific visual language for his past (including a striking image with a pillowcase over his head) and, per Caple, the writers — he name-checks Kyle in the room — kept pushing to make sure there was something deeper going on than just the usual pain-and-booze arc. That is a very nuts-and-bolts creative choice you do not hear every day on a reboot.

The basics you need

  • Premiere: Man on Fire Season 1 hits Netflix on April 30.
  • Lead: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays John Creasy. If you are keeping score, he has worn both DC and Marvel jerseys.
  • Setting: The action moves to Rio de Janeiro.
  • Source material: It is based on A.J. Quinnell's novel, but the series is not planning to just adapt the other Creasy books for future seasons.
  • Behind the camera: Steven Caple Jr. directs the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer.
  • Future hopes: Netflix would love a new franchise here, and Caple says he is in for Season 2 if viewers show up — with new conspiracies, rescues, or puzzles rather than a strict book-to-book blueprint.
