A former manager of Melbourne’s Spice Market has spoken out on Ruby Rose’s allegation that Katy Perry sexually assaulted her 16 years ago, telling the Herald Sun on Tuesday, April 14, that he remembers the pair arriving at the nightclub together.

Ruby Rose says Katy Perry assaulted her at a Melbourne club back in 2010. This week, an ex-manager from that venue stepped in with his version of that night, Perry fired back hard, and police in Australia opened an investigation. Here is what actually happened and when — without the guesswork.

What the club manager remembers

A former manager from Spice Market in Melbourne — he did not give his name — told the Herald Sun on Tuesday, April 14, that he remembers Perry, 41, and Rose, 40, arriving together that night in 2010. He says the club roped off a section for them and a small group, but he did not witness any assault.

His description of the room: packed. He estimates roughly 600 people and says Perry kept slipping out to dance with the crowd on the main floor, which he called a security headache. According to him, both Perry and Rose had been drinking but were not incapacitated.

Because management knew they were high-profile, staff tried to keep cameras away and ultimately moved them out a back fire exit to avoid drunk photos. He says they left in the same car, and he believed they were headed to a hotel.

What Ruby Rose is alleging

On Sunday, April 12, Rose posted a series of claims on Threads alleging Perry sexually assaulted her at Spice Market. She said that after the incident she vomited on Perry and, at the time, spun it publicly as a goofy drunk story because she did not know how else to deal with it. Rose also alleged Perry later agreed to help her with a U.S. visa, which Rose says influenced her decision to keep quiet then — and that when she did hint Perry was not a good person, she got piled on online.

Her description of the alleged assault is graphic: Rose says she was lying with her eyes closed on a friend’s lap to avoid Perry when Perry allegedly bent down, moved her own underwear aside, and rubbed her genitals on Rose’s face, which made Rose snap awake and throw up on her. Rose added she has since spoken to authorities about it.

Perry’s response

On Monday, April 13, Perry denied the allegations through a statement to Us Weekly, calling them:

'not only categorically false' but also 'dangerous reckless lies.'

Her rep also pointed to what they described as Rose’s history of making serious accusations on social media that others have denied.

Police get involved; Rose stops commenting

By Tuesday, April 14, Rose said she had filed a police report and completed her statements. She told followers she would not be commenting further, reposting, or engaging publicly on the accusations or anyone involved because police asked her not to — and, honestly, she said that was a relief.

In the early hours of Wednesday, April 15, Victoria Police confirmed to Us Weekly that detectives with the Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) have opened an investigation into a historical sexual assault from 2010. Police said the alleged incident took place at a licensed venue in Melbourne’s central business district.

The timeline, quickly

  • 2010: Night in question at Spice Market in Melbourne; Perry and Rose arrive together, per the club’s former manager.
  • Sun, Apr 12: Rose posts on Threads alleging Perry sexually assaulted her and says she threw up on Perry afterward; claims she once downplayed it publicly and that Perry later agreed to help with a U.S. visa.
  • Mon, Apr 13: Perry denies everything in a statement, calling the claims 'categorically false' and 'dangerous reckless lies.'
  • Tue, Apr 14: Former Spice Market manager (unnamed) tells the Herald Sun he remembers the night, says both had been drinking but were not out of it, and that staff escorted them out a back exit into the same car.
  • Tue, Apr 14: Rose says she has finalized her police reports and will not comment further at police request.
  • Wed, Apr 15: Victoria Police confirm SOCIT is investigating a historical sexual assault alleged to have occurred at a licensed premises in Melbourne’s CBD in 2010.

Where this leaves things

We have a very public accusation, a firm denial, a club manager who remembers the night but not an assault, and now an active police investigation that will move behind closed doors for a while. Us Weekly says it reached out to representatives for both Perry and Rose; Perry’s camp responded with the denial above, and Rose has gone quiet per police instructions.
