CBS Slashes Episode Orders Ahead of Fall 2026: Which Shows Got Cut and Why
CBS is trimming episode orders and overhauling its fall 2026 slate, delaying Ghosts, Matlock and NCIS: Sydney to a 2027 midseason launch alongside long-delayed newcomer Einstein.
Big reshuffle at CBS. A bunch of returning shows are getting fewer episodes, some premieres just got punted to 2027, and the network is tinkering with nights to make its franchise blocks line up. It ’s a lot at once, so here’s what actually changed and why it matters.
What CBS moved (and where it all lands)
Three familiar titles — 'Ghosts', 'Matlock', and 'NCIS: Sydney' — won’t kick off in fall 2026 after all. CBS is sliding all three to midseason 2027. They’ll be part of a crowded winter, alongside 'Einstein', which is finally making its debut in 2027 too.
There’s some nerdy scheduling jenga behind this: 'Matlock' is vacating its slot so 'Elsbeth' can slide in, which then frees CBS to premiere the new series 'Cupertino' on the same night. Over in NCIS world, 'NCIS: Sydney' is moving to midseason because 'NCIS: Origins' is taking its spot to pair with 'NCIS: New York' — and yes, 'Origins' itself is getting a shorter run than usual.
Why the episode trims?
Part of this is CBS stacking the deck: pairing franchise entries on the same night, making room for new launches, and keeping midseason stocked. The other part is resources — shorter orders across multiple dramas gives the network flexibility if it wants to shuffle again later. And to be fair, CBS has momentum it wants to ride.
The big wins fueling this confidence
The Yellowstone spinoff 'Marshals' came out hot. Its premiere drew 20.6 million viewers within the first seven days, which CBS says is the biggest audience for a network original series premiere without a football lead-in since 2017. It was quickly renewed for season 2, and it wasn’t the only bright spot. Alongside Justin Hartley’s 'Tracker', 'Marshals' finished as one of the top two most-watched shows during their premiere week. On streaming, the 'Marshals' debut also set a CBS record as the most-streamed episode ever on Paramount+ for the network.
'Marshals delivered a breakout performance, capturing a massive audience across platforms and quickly establishing itself as one of TV’s most powerful new series,' CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said. 'The overwhelming viewer response speaks to the strength of the Yellowstone world, the bold, character-driven storytelling from the creative team and the dynamic cast performances led by Luke Grimes.'
Elsewhere, 'Boston Blue' and 'Sheriff Country' both snagged fast season 2 renewals. 'Sheriff Country' averaged 7.6 million viewers. And in a stat that tells you why CBS keeps leaning into Friday drama, 'Blue Bloods' averaged 8 million viewers and topped every Friday night in total viewers.
OK, so what’s actually getting cut (and by how much)?
- 'Fire Country' season 5: 13 episodes (down from the usual 20)
- 'NCIS: Origins': 10 episodes (down from 20 in prior seasons)
- 'NCIS: Sydney': 10 episodes (down from 18)
- 'Matlock' season 3: 13 episodes (down from 16 this season)
The bottom line
If you’re feeling a little whiplash, you’re not wrong. CBS is trimming back orders and stockpiling midseason 2027 while it bets big on franchise pairings and a few very loud hits. Expect a heavier January launch window with 'Ghosts', 'Matlock', 'NCIS: Sydney', and 'Einstein' all in the mix — plus 'Elsbeth' and 'Cupertino' sharing a night, and an NCIS block anchored by 'Origins' and 'NCIS: New York'.
