Carson Daly’s One Dating Rule for His Kids Will Make You Rethink Yours
Carson Daly says his lone deal-breaker for his kids’ future partners would be if they’re vegan, a cheeky reveal on Today With Jenna and Sheinelle.
Carson Daly just put a very 2024 twist on the classic parent worry about who their kids might date. Spoiler: it is not about politics. It is about dinner.
The comment that cracked up the studio
"The only reservation I would have for my kids would be, like, [dating] a vegan or something like that maybe."
That was Carson, 52, on the Monday, May 19 episode of Today With Jenna and Sheinelle. The control room reportedly lost it, and even he wondered out loud if saying it would get him canceled. Bold choice for a morning show take.
What he actually meant (and what he did not)
Jenna Bush Hager pressed him on it: is the issue just that he wants his kids to bring home someone who eats meat? Daly said the food thing is deeper for his family. Meals are basically glue in the Daly household. Without them, he joked, he and his wife Siri Pinter would barely talk. So if one of the kids walked in with a partner who is a super picky eater, that would make Sunday dinners rough. He even tossed in a very dad-energy flex about his Traeger smoker.
Important caveat: he was not talking about people with food allergies or medical restrictions. He made that clear and laughed that he does not wish illness on anyone his kids date. The concern is about preference-driven pickiness more than anything else.
Why this sounds so specific
Daly painted the picture: it is Sunday, they are doing a big family spread, maybe pizzas, and the guest says they cannot eat anything. In his words, that hypothetical person is not making a great first impression. Not exactly subtle, but the guy is protecting his family hangout vibe. Honestly, I get it. If food is the way your family connects, it is a bummer when the table becomes a minefield.
The Daly roster (because yes, there are a lot of them)
- Jackson, 17
- Etta, 13
- London, 11
- Goldie, 6
All four are with his wife, producer and food lover-in-chief, Siri Pinter.
Meanwhile, the oldest is almost out the door
The vegan hypothetical is a future worry. The immediate one: college. Jackson is gearing up for next year, and Daly is clearly not ready to let go. He joked he is already scouting real estate near campus. Every time they pass LIU Post on Long Island, he tells his son they are going to snag a great apartment and hang out. In his head, he is basically moving to college with the kid. Reality, as he admitted, has not fully hit yet.
