Fire Country got through 60-odd episodes with its original seven series regulars fully intact, which for a CBS procedural about people who run into wildfires is a statistical anomaly. In April 2025, that streak ended twice in the same announcement.

Billy Burke and Stephanie Arcila were both out.

Why Gabriela was written out

The producers have been consistent about this: it was a story call, specifically about Gabriela Perez and Bode Leone. Their on-again, off-again relationship had been the show's emotional throughline since the pilot, and by the end of season 3 the writers had run out of ways to restage it.

"We felt like those two characters needed a reset," co-creator Tony Phelan told Deadline in April 2025.

Showrunner Tia Napolitano framed the double exit differently — as a nod to the reality of the job Fire Country dramatizes, where people get hurt, people die, and people leave. Whether that reads as a creative rationale or a ratings play is up to you, but it's the line the show has stuck with.

How the exit actually plays

Arcila didn't vanish between seasons. She came back as a guest star for the season 4 premiere in October 2025, which Napolitano promised would be a surprising but earned send-off. In it, Gabriela leaves Edgewater in the aftermath of the fire that kills Vince Leone — Burke's character — and takes a job recruiting first responders for Cal Fire around the country.

She leaves behind her father Manny (Kevin Alejandro), the station, and an unresolved thing with Bode. That last part is deliberate.

Is she coming back?

The producers have gone out of their way not to close the door:

  • Phelan on record — the Bode-Gabriela story doesn't end here, it goes on.
  • The chemistry argument — the producers have said the audience investment in the pairing is the reason to keep the option open.
  • Arcila herself — she hasn't ruled out a return.
  • The exit was written as travel, not death — unlike Vince, Gabriela is alive and reachable.

No return has been announced as of mid-2026.

What it cost the show

More than the character. Losing Burke's Vince took out the paternal center of the Leone family and forced season 4 to rebuild its command structure. Losing Gabriela took out the romantic engine. Doing both in a single premiere is either bold or reckless depending on how season 4 lands.

Gabriela's arc, for the record, ran from Olympic diver to Cal Fire firefighter and EMT in three seasons. She left with a promotion of sorts. Just not one anybody wanted.
