Cannes 2026 erupted as a thunderous 12-minute standing ovation for Nicolas Winding Refn’s Her Private Hell left star Sophie Thatcher visibly emotional.

Cannes is doing what Cannes does best: wall-to-wall glam, celebrities everywhere, and movies trying to blow the doors off the Palais. And in the middle of that circus, Sophie Thatcher just had the kind of moment actors dream about — a 12-minute standing ovation for Nicolas Winding Refn's new film that left her in tears. Also making noise: Na Hong-jin rolled in with an alien invasion brawler that had the black-tie crowd howling and cheering. So yeah, the festival is very much alive.

Her Private Hell lights up the room (and Sophie Thatcher)

Refn premiered Her Private Hell out of competition on Monday night, May 18, at the Grand Theatre Lumiere, and the place went off. We’re talking a full 12-minute standing ovation — one of the loudest, longest reactions Cannes 2026 has coughed up so far. A clip that’s been bouncing around social shows Thatcher getting emotional during the applause, while Refn and the cast kept egging the crowd on and stretching the celebration even longer.

Refn also took a few minutes — three, to be exact — to talk about a recent brush with death and why returning to Cannes with this film hit him hard. In his words:

'That changes you. When I was brought back to life with electricity, that I'm alive again; I only have 25 years of my life to live. But I'm going to make damn use of that to live life to the fullest. To make this film again and be back at Cannes where I came from is a huge step for mankind.'

Classic Refn: personal, provocative, and not exactly shy about the scale of the moment.

So what is Her Private Hell?

It ’s a surreal psychological thriller set in a futuristic, Los Angeles-adjacent metropolis. A glamorous group of women is gearing up to shoot a Barbarella-inspired sci-fi movie when a mysterious killer called Leather Man starts stalking the shadows and everything goes sideways. The ensemble includes Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, Kristine Froseth, and Havana Rose Liu.

Meanwhile, Na Hong-jin brings the thunder with Hope

If you thought Cannes was going to be all teary ovations this year, Hope said: not so fast. Na Hong-jin’s alien invasion thriller charged into the Palais and walked out with a roaring six-minute standing ovation. Word from inside: the film opens with about 40 straight minutes of extraterrestrial chaos tearing apart a quiet mountain town, then blindsides you with jagged, absurd humor that actually had the tuxedo crowd laughing out loud. On the marquee: Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon Jung, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander.

  • Her Private Hell (out of competition) premiered May 18, earned a 12-minute ovation at the Grand Theatre Lumiere; Sophie Thatcher got emotional; Refn gave a 3-minute speech about surviving a near-death experience.
  • Hope (in the Palais) detonated a six-minute ovation; opens with 40 minutes of relentless alien attacks, mixes in bizarre comedy; stars Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon Jung, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander.
  • Cannes 2026 runs May 12–23 and, per usual, is cranking out luxury fashion moments, viral celeb sightings, and big swing premieres.

The takeaway

Standing ovations are basically a festival sport at this point, but Thatcher’s teary Her Private Hell reception is easily one of this year’s signature beats so far. And with Hope crashing the party in spectacular, weird fashion, Cannes 2026 is doing what it does best: turning cinephile fever dreams into headline fuel.
