Camila Mendes and Nicholas Galitzine Poke Fun at a Wild Costume Twist in Masters of the Universe
Camila Mendes and Nicholas Galitzine pull back the curtain on their Masters of the Universe costumes—and what stepping into them demands.
The first look at Masters of the Universe delivers exactly what you want from a He-Man movie: big, glossy Eternia vistas, lots of clanging weapons, and costumes that march right up to the line between iconic and impractical. Naturally, the two leads are already roasting their own wardrobes.
The wardrobe banter
In a ScreenTime interview posted June 3, Camila Mendes (Teela) mentioned she basically had one outfit for the whole film. Nicholas Galitzine ( He-Man) immediately cracked that maybe the costume budget disappeared into building Beast Man. Mendes piled on, saying they were left with 'one little loincloth,' which is hilarious considering that is literally Galitzine’s look: a loincloth and harnesses.
Galitzine joked he kept telling Mendes not to get her costume dirty. Director Travis Knight cut in to note that putting your lead heroine in white is… not the most practical idea for action scenes. Galitzine agreed, calling it 'Irresponsible' with a grin.
Comfort vs. common sense
All the joking aside, both actors said the outfits were actually comfortable. Mendes described hers as feeling like soft leather. Galitzine might be wearing the least fabric on set, but he still called the getup workable for what he had to do.
And yes, that white look is almost certainly a nod to Teela’s classic design: white base, armor layered on top. Great for legacy points, stressful for laundry.
The footage itself
The preview does its job: Eternia looks immersive, the action’s heavy, and the costumes pop on screen. Early fan reactions have been impressed, which bodes well for a franchise that has taken its time getting back into live action.
Mendes finally gets her superhero moment
Mendes told PEOPLE this is the kind of role she’s been chasing since Riverdale, and the audition process was no cakewalk. She credits her chemistry with Galitzine for helping seal the deal. She also sounds genuinely thrilled to step into a world that hasn’t had much live-action love in decades.
'But it was really cool to enter this world that sort of has been untouched for a really long time, especially in the live-action space. And it was really cool to be able to bring these dormant characters to life again.'
Meanwhile, He-Man hit the gym
Galitzine has been walking through his body transformation for the role, and Entertainment Tonight noted he got the original He-Man’s stamp of approval. Not a bad endorsement when you’re carrying the Power Sword.
Where this is all headed
Travis Knight is directing, and the film is set up as a fresh chapter for the brand. The story follows He-Man reuniting with Teela to protect Eternia from whatever is coming for it. Simple, classic, the way you want a He-Man kickoff to be.
- Leads: Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man; Camila Mendes as Teela
- Director: Travis Knight
- Teela’s costume: white by design, a deliberate throwback to her classic look (and a nightmare for stains)
- Set piece highlight: Eternia looks big and lived-in; action is front and center
- On-set joke: Galitzine says Beast Man may have eaten the wardrobe budget; Knight admits white was a risky call
- Comfort check: both actors say their outfits were surprisingly easy to wear; Mendes’ felt like soft leather
- Backstory: Mendes calls this her long-time dream superhero role; tough audition, strong chemistry got her over the line
- Training note: Galitzine’s physical transformation earned a nod from the original He-Man
If this first peek is the baseline, expect some crunchy sword-and-sorcery with a playful sense of its own legacy. What do you think of the He-Man and Teela looks here — bold homage or fight-scene hazard? Drop your take in the comments.
