Love your scares with feelings—Mike Flanagan delivers, and it’s time to choose the series that truly earn a spot on your Halloween watchlist.

The top spot goes to The Haunting of Hill House, and it ’s not a close call. The 2018 Netflix breakout marries knockout scares with a family story that actually hurts, from the Crains’ doomed 1992 “flip this mansion” plan to the adult siblings dragged back together by fresh loss. Signature moments like the Bent‑Neck Lady live rent‑free in October brains, but it’s the cast — Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Victoria Pedretti — that makes the haunt feel personal.

All six series are streaming now in the U.S.: five on Netflix, one on Prime Video.

Second place belongs to Midnight Mass (2021, Netflix), a pressure cooker set on Crockett Island where Riley Flynn returns from prison just as a magnetic young priest starts “miracles” that come with a cost. Hamish Linklater’s turn as Father Paul is the standout, with Zach Gilford, Kate Siegel and Samantha Sloyan grounding the town’s faith, guilt and denial. It simmers, sermon by sermon, into a brutal finale that sticks.

Third is The Fall of the House of Usher (2023, Netflix), Mike Flanagan’s bloodiest playground. Pharma titan Roderick Usher watches his six adult children die one by one, while a late‑night confession unspools the family’s pact‑ridden past. Edgar Allan Poe threads through every set piece, and Bruce Greenwood leads a gleefully nasty ensemble with Mary McDonnell, Mark Hamill and Gugino. The kills are inventive and the black comedy bites — pure entertainment, even if the spectacle outweighs the sentiment of Flanagan’s top two.

The rest of the lineup

At No. 4, The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020, Netflix) trades jump scares for gothic romance. In 1980s England, American au pair Dani Clayton arrives to care for two orphaned kids at a remote estate where the dead won’t let go. The heartbeat is Dani’s bond with the gardener, Jamie — a love story that softens the edges of the haunt.

  • Victoria Pedretti — Dani Clayton
  • Amelia Eve — Jamie
  • Oliver Jackson‑Cohen — Peter Quint
  • T’Nia Miller — Hannah

No. 5 is Carrie (2026, Prime Video), an eight‑episode Stephen King adaptation that launched with a promising Rotten Tomatoes start. Carrie White is shoved into public high school after her father’s sudden death, bullied online and controlled by her fanatically religious mother. The update lands its takes on cruelty and faith, with strong work across the board, even if it never hits the atmospheric highs of the Netflix titles above.

  • Summer H. Howell — Carrie White
  • Samantha Sloyan — Margaret White
  • Matthew Lillard — the principal

Rounding things out at No. 6, The Midnight Club (2022, Netflix) gathers terminally ill teens in a hospice for nightly ghost stories — and a pact that whoever dies first will reach back from the other side. The show layers an overarching mystery over its story‑of‑the‑week chills; some tales land, others drift, and the tone leans more teen drama than full‑bore dread.
