Stuart Fails to Save the Universe episode 3 lets magic crash the multiverse, and whether that’s a cure or just more chaos is the episode’s big swing.

It ’s trial by fire — literally — for Bert when the gang lands in a universe where magic is everyday life and science gets you burned at the stake. While Barry Kripke bolts at the first sign of trouble, Bert accidentally summons rain, dousing the flames and instantly flipping a murderous crowd into adoring followers. Welcome to the third stop on HBO ’s Stuart Fails to Save the Universe tour of weird realities.

  • Kevin Sussman — Stuart Bloom
  • Brian Posehn — Bert Kibbler
  • Lauren Lapkus — Denise
  • John Ross Bowie — Barry Kripke
Episode 3 is titled “Spoiler: Bert Is Magic” and is part of a ten-episode run.

The foursome arrives in pairs this week: Stuart and Denise pop into his comic shop, while Kripke and Bert materialize at that not-so-festive stake. Once Bert realizes he’s a natural, he leans into it, conjuring a housebroken puppy and flipping a Coke to a Diet Coke to a Dr Pepper with a flick of the wrist — parlor tricks that make him a celebrity on the spot.

Kripke sprints to the comic shop to find Stuart and a fix for their busted universe-hopping gear. Denise, meanwhile, spirals at a bar, ordering round after round while unloading her scrambled feelings — last episode she was stuck in a loveless marriage to Gary; here, Stuart is suddenly pursuing her and none of it makes sense.

A desperate joke for “Alexa” brings in an actual Alexa — a tiny, sardonic demon played by Louis Mustillo — who escorts them to a familiar face: sorceress Bernadette Rostenkowski (guest star Melissa Rauch). Bernadette says her powers are gone but claims she can reverse a spell if she gets a little of Stuart’s blood, “as close to an innocent” as she can find. He hands it over, and she promptly hulks out into a towering demon.

Cameos and chaos

Before the reveal, another Big Bang alum pops in: Wil Wheaton strides on as a high-ranking sorcerer who exposes Bernadette’s true nature and sentences Stuart to death for helping her. When Wheaton moves to finish the job with magic, Bert steps between them and unleashes everything he’s got, overpowering and killing the sorcerer. Wheaton’s dying warning about Bernadette proves spot-on.

Bernadette goes full kaiju — clumsily squishing bystanders and apologizing in that sweet Bernadette voice — and demands the team’s universe-jumping machine. No sale. Instead, Stuart and company press Bert to use his new gifts to patch their broken rig. He does, and they blast out just ahead of the stomps.

Cut to a stark new reality: Stuart in a psychiatric ward, taking meds from a nurse who compliments his sketch — an image that matches the crew huddled over the machine moments earlier in magic-world. Episode 3 ends on that drawing.
