Andy Muschietti still dreams of creating a massive supercut of both It films, packed with never-before-seen footage, but his work on the Welcome to Derry series has put the project on hold.

As the first season of It: Welcome to Derry wraps up, fans are buzzing about what’s next for the franchise. One topic that keeps coming up is the long-rumored supercut of both It movies, a project Andy Muschietti has teased for years. During a recent Reddit AMA for It: Welcome to Derry, a fan asked if the extended cut that merges both films with hours of unused material was still in the works. Muschietti responded,

Yes, still a big dream of mine. Since we've been involved heavily in this show, we haven't had time to execute it. Crossing fingers.

From the Big Screen to the Small Screen

Before diving into the world of Welcome to Derry, Muschietti first brought Stephen King’s chilling story to life with the 2017 adaptation of It, followed by the 2019 sequel, It: Chapter Two. Both films closely followed King’s original novel, with the first focusing on the Losers Club as kids in the 1980s and the second picking up nearly three decades later as the group returns to their haunted hometown. After the sequel’s release, Muschietti floated the idea of a supercut that would blend both movies into a single, seamless experience running over six hours.

This extended version wouldn’t just stitch the two films together—it would also include a treasure trove of deleted scenes and material that never made it to the screen. Among the most intriguing cut moments is a scene featuring Maturin, the cosmic turtle, who appears in Bill’s basement in the second film. Maturin, a wise and ancient being from King’s universe, serves as a counterbalance to evil forces like Pennywise. The scene was ultimately dropped due to its underwater setting and pacing concerns.

Unleashing King’s Universe

Muschietti has shown what he can do when given creative freedom within King’s world. Many viewers have praised his work on Welcome to Derry, with some calling it the

greatest depiction of Pennywise in any media format

—a portrayal that, for some, surpasses his take on the character in the movies.

Even if the supercut never materializes, Muschietti’s journey in Derry is far from finished. With the first season of Welcome to Derry ending on December 14, plans are already in motion for two more seasons. The second season will jump back to 1935, while the third will explore events in 1908. Season one already offered a glimpse of 1908, showing the evil entity’s first transformation into Pennywise after luring and killing circus clown Bob Grey.

The Future of Derry

It: Welcome to Derry season one is now streaming on HBO in the U.S. and on Now in the U.K. Fans eager for more can look forward to upcoming guides on Easter eggs and cameos, as well as updates on new Stephen King adaptations heading to screens soon.
