Amy Adams’ 94% Sci-Fi Masterpiece Is the Alien Movie to Stream Tonight

Every now and then, a sci-fi movie sneaks up and smacks you with big ideas and bigger feelings. If you want one that uses the classic 'aliens show up' setup to actually talk about grief, memory, and language without turning into a dry lecture, there is a clear pick.
The one to watch: Arrival (2016)
Denis Villeneuve directed it, Amy Adams anchors it, and it is based on Ted Chiang's novella that screenwriter Eric Heisserer adapted. On paper, it is a first-contact story. In practice, it is a gut-punch about loss wrapped in the tense logistics of trying to talk to something not from here.
Adams plays Louise Banks, a linguistics professor pulled in by the government after twelve enormous spacecraft park themselves at different points around the world. Her job is simple-sounding and nearly impossible: figure out how to communicate before panic, politics, and misunderstandings spiral into something irreversible. Alongside her are Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker, both doing sturdy work that lets Adams' performance take the spotlight.
By the way, Adams reportedly signed on within 24 hours of reading the script. Not shocking once you see what the movie is actually doing beneath the hovering ships.
Why it hit big (and still does)
Arrival cost a relatively lean 47 million dollars to make and pulled in over 200 million worldwide. Critics loved it too: 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, eight Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director, and a win for Best Sound Editing. If you follow awards-season horse races, that is a serious haul for a cerebral studio sci-fi release.
It also nudged Villeneuve into even larger sandboxes. After Arrival, he went straight to Blade Runner 2049 and then Dune, followed by Dune: Part Two. A third Dune chapter has been in the works as he keeps pushing scale and ambition.
On the craft side, the movie is flat-out gorgeous and unnervingly calm, which is exactly why the emotions land. The cinematography and sound design do a lot of quiet heavy lifting — you feel the awe and the dread without the film screaming at you.
