American Idol finalist Keyla Richardson finished third in the season 24 finale — and her mom is fuming. In a Facebook post, Katja Richardson blasted voters, declaring, "My baby was robbed. She did not fail."

American Idol wrapped its latest season with a twist that stung for Keyla Richardson fans: she finished third. Her mom? Not taking it quietly.

Finale night, quick snapshot

  • Keyla, 29, kicked off the Monday, May 11 finale with Alicia Keys' 2009 track "Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)" as a nod to guest mentor Alicia Keys.
  • For the hometown round, she went with "I Love The Lord."
  • Right after that round, Ryan Seacrest announced Keyla had placed third.
  • The final two moved on, and Hannah Harper won the title, with Jordan McCullough as runner-up.

Mom was not subtle

Hours after the show, Keyla's mom Katja Richardson posted on Facebook (Monday, May 11) and left zero room for interpretation.

"My baby was robbed. She did not fail. She was robbed I'm sorry I'm gonna say it!!"

How Keyla is handling it

Keyla sounded upbeat on Instagram that same night, calling the journey amazing and making it clear she is just getting started. The next day (Tuesday, May 12), she teamed with Local Pulse Pensacola to announce a welcome home party at 3 pm at @flypns. The invite hyped the "KeyHive" fanbase and praised how her voice this season represented Pensacola, the community, and her faith. Translation: big hometown love, right away.

Why her fanbase is this loud

Keyla was raised in Pensacola, Florida, and already has a gospel hit to her name: "So Good" topped Billboard's Gospel Airplay chart in 2021. Earlier this season on Songs of Faith Night, she performed "Jireh" by Elevation Worship and Maverick City. In an April interview, she said she grew up in church, wanted a song people could connect with, and hoped the audience would worship with her. She also appreciated that the show let contestants be open about their faith, which is central for her.

Bottom line

Third place on Idol is still a rocket boost, and with a hometown rally waiting at the airport and a clear lane in gospel and inspirational music, Keyla looks more launched than finished. Mom might be furious, but Keyla's already moving on to the next chapter.
