American Horror Story Revives Its Infamous Killer Clown After Nine Years
American Horror Story made a game of heartbreak — fall for a character, lose them at season’s end — until Apocalypse smashed its universes together and resurrected fan favorites. Now the franchise is doubling down, with production gearing up for its most ambitious chapter yet.
American Horror Story just hit record on Season 13, and it looks like Ryan Murphy and company are raiding the trophy case. Production is underway, legacy faces are back after nearly a decade away, and the show sure seems to be lining up another season-spanning mash-up. Translation: they know exactly what buttons to push.
The cast just leveled up
We already knew a murderers' row of AHS icons were on board this time: Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Jessica Lange are all set to appear. Now the roster just grew again. Deadline says four more actors have joined the season, including two fresh additions and two fan-favorite returns from Freak Show who are stepping back into the exact same roles.
- New to AHS: Mena Suvari (American Beauty) and Berto Colon (The Night Agent)
- Back from Freak Show: Matt Fraser as Paul the Illustrated and John Carroll Lynch as Twisty the Clown
- Also in the mix: beyond the above, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, and more are already confirmed to reprise their characters from AHS: Coven
Yep, Twisty is back. Cue the nightmares.
American Horror Story waited until Season 4 to unleash its first big-screen-of-your-brain clown, and when John Carroll Lynch showed up in Freak Show as Twisty, that was it—instant icon. He stalked Florida in broad daylight, targeting cruel adults and unlucky couples, all while clinging to this warped belief that he was still meant to make kids happy. The mask did the talking, but the backstory gave him pathos. It is very not-nothing that he clicked hard enough to spin off a comic book, 'Twisty: The Clown Chronicles,' which then spawned an action figure line.
Twisty didn’t just stay put in Season 4, either. He resurfaced during the clown-heavy Cult season, and even after his on-screen death he popped up later as a ghost or a nightmare apparition to torment someone years down the line. He’s basically a campfire legend inside the show’s own lore at this point, which makes dropping him into Season 13 an easy fit.
So is this a crossover season?
Officially, no one’s calling it that. Unofficially, come on. You’ve got Coven characters returning, Twisty stomping in from Freak Show (and Cult), and a stack of OG stars—some of whom haven’t been around in close to ten years—sharing the same sandbox. AHS has done this before in a big way with Apocalypse (Season 8), and all the signs here are pointing in the same direction.
Timeline check
Production is happening now. FX has Season 13 pegged for Fall 2026, which gives the marketing team plenty of time to lean hard on a familiar grin and a filthy clown suit. Expect Twisty front and center on the posters, the teasers, your nightmares—the works.
