In HOTD, humans aren't as important as dragons!

Tensions in Westeros have reached a crescendo, and the full-scale civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons has begun to take its toll on key players on both the Black and Green sides. And that includes not only humans, but also dragons. Unlike Game of Thrones, where we had to learn the names of numerous characters, in House of the Dragon we also have to learn the names of fire-breathing creatures.

While dragons are a semi-legendary relic of the past in GoT (that is, until Daenerys raised Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion), 200 years before that, no major battle was complete without dragons and their riders. We've decided to list all the dragons that have appeared or will appear in House of the Dragon Season 2, as well as what is currently known about them.

Syrax

Our list begins with Syrax, a yellow she-dragon ridden by Rhaenyra. Since Season 2, we have only seen this dragon in the first episode, when Rhaenyra visited the remains of Lucerys and his dragon Arrax. Unfortunately, according to Fire & Blood, the dragon does not survive the Dance of the Dragons and is slain by the enraged smallfolk of King's Landing.

Caraxes

The red he-dragon Caraxes is a loyal ally of Daemon Targaryen. In Season 2, we saw him in Episode 3 when Daemon arrived at Harrenhal. Sadly, Daemon and Caraxes are believed to have died in battle with Aemond and his Vhagar.

Vhagar

The she-dragon Vhagar is the oldest living dragon at the time of the events of the Dance of the Dragons, originally ridden by Queen Visenya Targaryen during Aegon's conquest, who lived over a hundred years earlier. Vhagar later passed into the hands of Laena Velaryon, Daemon's late wife, but after her death the dragon went to his nemesis, Aemond. While Daemon's fate was never revealed, the remains of Aemond and Vhagar were found.

Sunfyre

Sunfyre the Golden is described in Fire & Blood as the most beautiful dragon in history. As we know from the events of Episode 4, Sunfyre and his rider Aegon Targaryen were attacked by Rhaenys' dragon, but both sides were burned by Vhaghar, leaving Aegon in a coma and Sunfyre's fate unknown. In the book, Sunfyre died of his wounds near the end of the war.

Meleys

Meleys was a she-dragon originally owned by Daemon and Viserys' mother, Alyssa Targaryen, and later taken over by Rhaenys. As we saw in Episode 4, both the dragon and her rider died after being attacked by Aemond and Vhagar.

Dreamfyre

The silver and blue she-dragon Dreamfyre belongs to Helaena Targaryen. The four eggs that Rhaena took to Pentos are believed to be Dreamfyre's. Three of them, as confirmed by director Geeta Vasant Patel, are Daenerys' future dragons. The fourth remains unknown, but it could be Morning, Rhaena's she-dragon, whose egg was produced by Syrax in the book.

Vermax

Vermax and his rider, Jacaerys Velaryon, began to play a larger role in the war as Jace set out to recruit House Frey.

Moondancer

Moondancer is a young dragon owned by Baela Targaryen. We saw a bit of her in the third episode. While Baela survived the war, her Moondancer died in a battle with Sunfyre, though he was mortally wounded.

Unclaimed Dragons

In addition, there are several unclaimed dragons that have been mentioned but not yet introduced in the series. They are Tyraxes, the future dragon of Joffrey, son of Rhaenyra, Seasmoke, who will be given to Addam of Hull, Sheepstealer, the dragon of Nettles, Damon's close companion, who will definitely appear in the series.

There are also three dragons that live at Dragonstone but do not have riders. They are Cannibal, Grey Ghost, and Silverwing. Not to be forgotten is Vermithor, aka the Bronze Fury, the dragon of Jaehaerys I Targaryen.
