All 6 Most Anticipated DCEU TV Shows We Can't Wait to Binge
Get ready for a new era of DC.
With the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran, DC underwent a number of significant changes: The CW's Arrowverse, which included shows about Supergirl, Flash, Superman and Arrow himself, ceased to exist; Man of Steel, Justice League, Aquaman and other projects related to the so-called Snyderverse also fell by the wayside.
Now, DC has a bright future ahead of it, and hopefully a lot of worthy TV projects.
1. The Penguin
Release Date: September 19, 2024
In Matt Reeves' The Batman, unrecognizable Colin Farrell stunned the viewers as the new incarnation of Oswald Cobblepot, Gotham City's most ruthless gangster. The upcomingг HBO series will tell the story of Penguin's fate after the events of the movie.
The former right-hand man to the late Italian mobster Carmine Falcone, Penguin strives to gain authority in Gotham's criminal world. Carmine's daughter, Sofia Falcone, and a number of psychological problems prevent Oswald from achieving his goal.
According to Farrell, the new Penguin must break away from the typical antagonist stereotype. In the series, Cobblepot is portrayed as a bitter man, but not without inner doubts and a desire to love and be loved.
2. Creature Commandos
Release Date: December 5, 2024
The first project of the updated DC Extended Universe will be the animated series Creature Commandos – which is surprising, since the DC comic book series of the same name has never been particularly popular with fans.
The show will tell the story of a secret squad of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller, a ruthless and calculating government official. The showrunner will be James Gunn himself, and Viola Davis will return to the role of Amanda.
Creature Commandos will be part of a project called Gods and Monsters, while the aforementioned The Penguin will unfold within DC Elseworlds.
3. Waller
Release Date: TBA
The next DC series project will be dedicated to Amanda Waller herself, played once again by Viola Davis. The show will be written by Emmy Award winner Christal Henry in collaboration with Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver.
Within the Gods and Monsters universe, Amanda Waller's story will be a spin-off of James Gunn's Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad – in the new series, the head of the Task Force X program will have to work with the Peacemaker team.
Little is known about the plot, the project was originally planned to be released in 2024, but now this seems unlikely.
4. Paradise Lost
Release Date: TBA
While the new Wonder Woman movie is on pause, DC Studios is developing a TV series set on her home island of Themyscira. The project, called Paradise Lost, was announced in early 2023.
Gunn and Safran described it as a political fantasy drama in the vein of Game of Thrones. The show will be set in ancient times, long before Diana was born. The title Paradise Lost itself is a reference to the comic book arc about the civil war on Themyscira.
It looks like we're in for a rousing collaboration of historical aesthetics and epic action – but without the participation of dragons.
5. Lanterns
Release Date: 2025
The Green Lantern project has been in production hell at HBO Max for years, and after James Gunn was appointed as the new head of DC Studios, the script for the future show was significantly reworked – instead of a traditional superhero story, the idea was proposed to film an entire investigation in the style of True Detective.
It is particularly interesting that Damon Lindelof (creator of The Leftovers and Lost) is among the executive producers of Lanterns. The main characters will be two Green Lanterns – Hal Jordan and John Stewart – who are conducting an unusual investigation on Earth.
6. Booster Gold
Release Date: TBA
The eccentric Booster Gold is also getting his own series. In the original comics, Booster was presented as an alien from the future who deliberately created a heroic image for Earthlings with his extraordinary knowledge of historical events and discoveries.
In the upcoming series, Booster will face "imposter syndrome" in order to finally learn his true self. At various times, Booster Gold has been unsuccessfully attempted to be integrated into the DC Cinematic Universe – the character was first introduced in the series Smallville, but was limited to one episode. In 2011, Syfy ordered an entire series about him, but the project was canceled due to the devastating criticism of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
As a result, the real work on adapting the character to the small screen began only in 2023. The release date of Booster Gold is still unknown.
