Ahsoka Season 2: Who’s In, What’s Next, and Why You’re Still Waiting
Star Wars blasts back into theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu, even as more films queue up — including Star Wars: Starfighter next year — and the galaxy far, far away holds its TV ground with Ahsoka season two, currently the only series on deck.
Star Wars is back in theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu, and there are more films lining up (yes, including Star Wars: Starfighter next year), but Lucasfilm is not walking away from TV. The next big thing on the small screen is Ahsoka Season 2 — and right now, it is the only live-action series on their slate. The bad news: you are going to be waiting a bit.
So, when is Ahsoka Season 2 coming?
Not this year. Despite the long-running chatter that it might sneak in after The Mandalorian and Grogu had its moment, Lucasfilm has pushed Ahsoka Season 2 to early 2027. No exact date yet — just the window.
The delay boils down to post-production. Earlier this month, Dave Filoni said he was knee-deep in cutting the whole season at once, which is a tall order for a Star Wars show loaded with VFX. Taking the extra months to make the shots sing is a smarter move than sprinting to the finish line. Season 2 also shot more on location instead of leaning entirely on the Volume, which can make the edit and effects pass more complex. Short version: they filmed it, now they are taking their time to polish it.
"Editing all of the episodes at once."
Who is back (and who is new)?
Rosario Dawson returns as Ahsoka Tano, joined by pretty much all the Season 1 pillars — plus one major recast after a heartbreaking loss. Here is the core lineup as it stands:
- Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano
- Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren
- Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla
- Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger
- Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati
- Jeryl Prescott Gallien as Aktropaw
- Jane Edwina Seymour as Lakesis
- Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn
- Rory McCann as Baylan Skoll
- Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker
- David Tennant as Huyang
- Steve Blum as Zeb
- Chopper
- Admiral Ackbar
On the Baylan front: Rory McCann is taking over for the late Ray Stevenson, who passed away before Season 1 premiered in 2023. McCann said last year it was the 'right decision' to continue Baylan’s arc after that cliffhanger. Considering we last saw Baylan staring down the Mortis gods statues on Peridea, leaving that thread dangling would have been bizarre. Recasting was the only real option.
What the story is likely to cover
Lucasfilm has not put out a synopsis or kicked off marketing yet, but Season 1 made the setup pretty clear.
Thrawn is back in the main galaxy, which all but guarantees an attempted strike on the New Republic as he tries to rebuild Imperial power. Expect Hera and her allies to lead the defense — hopefully with the New Republic government finally taking the threat seriously now that Thrawn is not just a rumor.
Meanwhile, Ahsoka and Sabine stayed on Peridea after getting Ezra home. Their relationship — and Sabine’s Jedi training — should be front and center. In the Season 1 closer, Ahsoka basically told Sabine they were where they were meant to be and it was time to move forward. Translation: they might follow their own path on Peridea instead of jumping into the first Thrawn skirmish that pops up. Could they try to get back? Sure. But the show laid the groundwork for them to grow where they are.
Baylan and Shin are also still on Peridea. Baylan’s mission to break free from the usual Jedi/Sith loop led him to those Mortis statues — a giant neon sign that Ahsoka is primed to dive deeper into the weirder corners of the Force. If Season 2 splits time between the New Republic vs. Thrawn in the main galaxy and the Force-myth arc on Peridea, the trick will be keeping it all feeling like one story instead of two different shows stitched together. If they pull it off, it could be the most ambitious thing the series has done.
Bottom line
Ahsoka Season 2 is shot, in heavy post, and targeting early 2027. The cast is stacked, the Baylan storyline lives on with Rory McCann, and the stakes are bigger on both sides of the galaxy. It is a wait — but if they are taking this long to get the visuals and the cut right, I am fine letting them cook.
