ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year goes to John Carpenter, honoring his legendary career
A horror legend just nabbed ACE’s Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award — a nod to a career that helped shape horror and Hollywood.
The editors behind Hollywood ’s best cuts are putting their top honor on a master of timing: at UCLA’s Royce Hall on Feb. 6, 2027 , American Cinema Editors will present its Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year to John Carpenter during the 77th ACE Eddie Awards. Comedian Patton Oswalt returns as host for the night celebrating film and TV editing.
ACE president Sabrina Plisco pointed to the craft that makes Carpenter’s movies stick with audiences, praising his understanding of “rhythm, tension and restraint,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. It ’s a nod from the cutting room to a filmmaker whose suspense lives and dies on when the camera moves, when the music hits, and when the blade finally drops.

You can see that precision baked into Carpenter’s classics—the prowling, point-of-view opening and minimalist score of Halloween; the suffocating paranoia of The Thing; the gritty momentum of Escape from New York. He often composed his own music, too, turning sound into another storytelling tool.

Career honors
The ceremony will also spotlight two editors with career achievement awards:
- Bonnie Koehler, ACE — credits include The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Poltergeist, and TV’s L.A. Law.
- Christopher Nelson, ACE — edited acclaimed series like Lost (winning a Primetime Emmy for the finale, “The End”), Mad Men, and Six Feet Under.
The 77th ACE Eddie Awards take place at UCLA’s Royce Hall on Feb. 6, 2027.
