9-1-1: Newest Season 8 Update Hints at Chris Coming Back
Looks like Chris is going back to his grieving father after all.
Summary
- ABC is heavily promoting the eighth season of 9-1-1.
- A new update suggests that Chris and Eddie may reunite.
- It is not yet known what will bring the boy back.
The seventh season of 9-1-1 certainly brought us a lot of joy. Just think of the wedding of Chimney (Kenneth Choi) and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), which went off despite the former's sudden outbreak of viral encephalitis, and the passionate romance that blossomed between Buck (Oliver Stark) and Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.). But for all the happy moments, the procedural drama's latest season had its share of incredibly dark storylines: Bobby (Peter Krause) tried to deal with the tragic aftermath of the Minnesota fire, and now he's lost his status as captain of Station 118; and Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms) sadly lost the right to adopt Mara (Askyler Bell).
Perhaps the most poignant arc, however, was that of Eddie (Ryan Guzman). Trying to get over his grief after his wife's death, he began seeing her doppelganger for therapeutic purposes, which incredibly shocked his son Christopher (Gavin McHugh). Not wanting to trigger the trauma, Chris moved back to Texas to be with his grandparents.
It was an incredibly heartbreaking moment for fans, and many sincerely hope that father and son can still overcome their difficulties and be reunited. And judging by the latest update, we really should expect Chris' return in Season 8.
Gavin McHugh Shares His Thoughts on Season 7
With the eighth season of the Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear-created series premiering this fall, ABC has been actively promoting 9-1-1 on social platforms. From July 11 to July 18, the show's official Instagram account posted two videos featuring cast members sharing their favorite memories from the filming of Season 7. Notably, those actors turned out to be none other than Ryan Guzman and Gavin McHugh, who played Edmundo and Christopher Diaz.
While Ryan Guzman's favorite memory was Chimney's bachelor party, Gavin's was attending the wedding ceremony in the hospital room because it allowed him to see his fellow cast members, whom he said he had not seen in a year.
Of course, fans thought that these two clips were there for a reason, and it is a hint that father and son will be reunited sooner or later in Season 8.
Will Chris Be Back for Season 8?
Fortunately, Gavin McHugh's involvement in the eighth season of 9-1-1 has been officially confirmed, so we will definitely see more of Chris. However, it is still unknown if he will return to Los Angeles to live with his father or if he will continue to live with his grandparents in Texas.
The second option is the most likely, as Christopher will certainly need more than a little time to cool down and realize that his father is also a living person trying to overcome his own traumas. He could, for example, show up when Buck comes to visit, maybe even get him to empathize with his father and convince him to come home.
Or maybe the writers will find some other way to bring the boy back to his father. We just hope the reason is not some tragic incident with Eddie. But regardless of the motivation for the comeback, we think the writers should give father and son some time to reflect. For Eddie, it is imperative to realize how much his grief has eclipsed the present, especially Chris' upbringing. As for the boy, he needs to understand that his father may be a mess, but he does care about him more than anyone in the world.
9-1-1 Season 8 was announced in May and will premiere on September 26, 2024.
