The Big Bang Theory is launching its first sequel, jumping from nearly 20 years on CBS to HBO Max as Chuck Lorre expands his comedy universe — and the return of familiar faces could make this next chapter must-watch.

Well, this is not where I expected The Big Bang Theory universe to go next. After nearly two decades parked on CBS, Chuck Lorre is pivoting to streaming for the franchise ’s first actual sequel, and the lead is... Stuart. Yes, the soft-spoken comic shop guy is now fronting a full-blown sci-fi adventure. Honestly? Kind of love that swing.

So what is this thing?

The show is called 'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' and it lands on HBO Max. Lorre is back with original Big Bang co-creator Bill Prady, and they are not just doing more hangout sitcom stuff. Kevin Sussman’s Stuart Bloom gets pulled into a big, trippy genre quest that looks way different from the mothership. The trailer sells a visually splashy, concept-first comedy instead of the old apartment-lab-wireless-router comfort zone.

Who is already in it

The promo confirms a few familiar faces are along for the chaos: Lauren Lapkus is back as Denise, Brian Posehn returns as Bert Kibbler, and John Ross Bowie is back as Barry Kripke. It is a nice mix of fan favorites with strong comic timing, which should keep the show grounded while it runs at the walls.

Will the Pasadena gang show up?

The premise apparently threads Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard into the story in some meaningful way, but there is no confirmation they appear in person. Best case, everybody pops in for at least a quick cameo. Worst case, they stay offscreen while the plot still nods to them. Either way, the door is clearly open.

Five Big Bang characters who should swing by

  • Zach Johnson (Brian Thomas Smith) - Not the most frequent guest, but always a highlight. Penny’s famously lovable himbo ex (who she accidentally married in Vegas, long story) came back in the final season to ask Leonard to be his and his wife’s sperm donor. If this show plays with alternate timelines, imagine a reality where Zach and Penny actually stuck it out... or one where Leonard said yes.
  • Wil Wheaton (as himself) - He never needed a character; he played a dialed-up version of Wil Wheaton and feuded with Sheldon for years before easing into frenemies, then sparring again after he took over as the new Professor Proton host. Bringing him into Stuart’s cosmic mess would add instant meta-fun, plus the man’s resume is catnip for this crowd.
  • Mrs. Wolowitz - Stuart’s strangest and most unexpectedly sweet arc was becoming a kind of surrogate son when he moved in to help Howard’s mom after the comic shop fire. She has passed in the main timeline, but if the show is hopping realities, a quick voice cameo would be a perfect, bittersweet Easter egg.
  • Leslie Winkle (Sara Gilbert) - Introduced as a sharp Caltech peer and on-and-off thing for Leonard, Leslie was even bumped to series regular in season 2 before the writers sidelined her. She never got the story weight she deserved. A guest spot here with something meaty to do would be a smart course-correction.
  • The Coopers (from the past) - The brand is thriving in prequel land with Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. If Stuart is reality-hopping, why not bump into the Coopers at a different point in their lives? The show could even peek at a path where George Sr. does not die unexpectedly and Sheldon grows up with that intact bond. That one tweak alone would ripple everywhere.

The vibe

This is a big tonal leap from 'people banter in a living room' to 'Stuart vs. the cosmos,' and that is exactly why it could work. The trailer looks like the franchise finally let itself play in the same sci-fi sandbox it has been joking about for years. If the cameos hit and the weirdness stays character-first, this could be a clever refresh instead of more reheated takeout.

When and where to watch
