Zack Snyder shrugs off the MCU’s winning formula: “That’s not as fun”
At long last, Zack Snyder is spelling out why Marvel’s approach to superhero cinema isn’t his thing.
In a new conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Zack Snyder drew a sharp line between his taste and the Marvel Cinematic Universe formula, saying he isn’t interested in chasing a crowd-pleasing rhythm. He even compared the Marvel model to an amusement park ride—thrilling by design, but not where he wants to live as a filmmaker.
“I’d rather just kind of talk about the mythology of them. And maybe that’s not as fun,”
Snyder framed it as a conscious trade-off. His comic-book movies —from Man of Steel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to Zack Snyder’s Justice League—treat heroes like modern myths, built to wrestle with power, faith, and consequence rather than deliver a quip-and-banter cadence. He acknowledged that approach can be heavier than what Marvel typically serves up, and he’s fine with that.
He also pointed to cultural ubiquity as part of the equation, noting that—outside of Spider- Man—characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are instantly recognizable worldwide. In his view, Marvel has expertly turned its roster into an easy sell, prioritizing accessibility; Snyder said his own interest lies in digging deeper into what these icons mean.
On Gunn’s Superman
Asked about the current DC handoff, Snyder said he hasn’t watched James Gunn ’s Superman yet but wished the new DC Studios era well.
“I just haven’t gotten around to it yet,”
Even as he distances himself from the Marvel playbook, Snyder kept the temperature low on DC’s future, signaling support for Gunn’s direction while sticking to his own lane: mythology over the roller coaster.
