Will Trent Star Opens Up After Pivotal Death Rocks the Series
Will Trent just dropped its boldest twist yet: Amanda Wagner is dead — and Sonja Sohn is breaking her silence. In the April 14 episode, Wagner is killed while covertly aiding the FBI to strengthen Will’s case against Adelaide Trevens, sending shockwaves through the series.
Well, that was a swing. Will Trent just took out a pillar of the show: Amanda Wagner is dead, and Sonja Sohn is talking about it after fans understandably lost it.
What happened on the show
In the Tuesday, April 14 episode, GBI chief Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) was killed while quietly working with the FBI to feed intel into Will Trent's (Ramón Rodríguez) case against Adelaide Trevens (Mallory Jansen). It was a stealth move in-story and a blindsider for viewers who have watched Amanda protect, push, and sometimes bulldoze Will since season 1.
Sonja Sohn responds to the backlash
Sohn, 61, addressed the reaction on Instagram on Saturday, April 18, saying she was genuinely surprised by how hard Amanda's death hit people. She kept it blunt about the business side of TV, too:
"Once you get the pink slip, it's just a job. I got a job like you got a job. It's just a job."
She added (in her own measured way) that actors are pretty far down the decision ladder, and when a show decides your time is up, you say goodbye and move on. Sohn said she'll dig deeper into what it means to part ways with characters in her upcoming memoir, and noted that playing Amanda — a more thoughtful, reserved presence than she is in real life — has her keeping things a bit buttoned up for now. She still closed on optimism: best years ahead, a toast to Will Trent and to Amanda, and a promise that there's more Sonja Sohn on the way.
In the caption, she thanked Will Trent fans for flooding her page with love. She tried to answer everyone, but the comments piled up and, as she put it, life needed tending. She promised to give fans something they can really sink their teeth into and celebrate with her soon.
Why the writers did it
Co-showrunner Karine Rosenthal told Variety that Amanda has protected Will as far back as they've known each other. Removing her shifts the entire GBI power dynamic because whoever steps in next won't have that same history with him. The choice, she said, hits the most characters at once and resets the show in a way that's painful but, from a storytelling standpoint, energizing as they head toward season 5.
For the behind-the-scenes crowd: Rosenthal said Sohn was told early in season 4 that her arc would wrap, and she handled it with grace. Executive producer Daniel Thomsen added that very few people — on camera or in the writers room — get to leave a series on their exact terms, and Sohn navigated the exit like a total pro.
