Why was Kate killed in NCIS?
Two seconds. That's roughly how long NCIS fans got to celebrate Kate Todd surviving a bullet before a second one ended her life. The season 2 finale, "Twilight," aired May 24, 2005, and its final moments remain among the most shocking in network TV history. The reason behind them started with a tearful conversation in an office.
Sasha Alexander asked to leave
NCIS was — and is — a punishing show to make: roughly 10 months of filming a year, with days that could stretch past 16 hours. Two seasons in, Alexander was done. Creator Donald P. Bellisario described the moment in a July 2005 Chicago Tribune interview — she came to see him two days before his vacation, in tears:
"I just can't work this hard."
She had signed on for six seasons, but Bellisario went to CBS and persuaded the network to release her from her contract. Executive producer Charles Floyd Johnson later told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023 that Alexander hadn't necessarily wanted to leave at all — just to lighten her workload.
Bellisario's solution was more absolute: kill the character, shock the audience, and raise the stakes forever.
How it went down
- The save — Kate takes a bullet meant for Gibbs; her vest stops it.
- The shot — seconds later, a sniper round from rooftop terrorist Ari Haswari (Rudolf Martin) kills her instantly.
- The secrecy — the death scene existed on a single printed script page, and the crew filmed an alternate ending where Kate survives to prevent leaks. Even Michael Weatherly didn't know until the day of the shoot.
- The cliffhanger — viewers waited all summer for the season 3 two-parter "Kill Ari" to deliver justice.
What her death changed
Everything. "Kill Ari" introduced Kate's replacement, Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) — Ari's half-sister, who ends the manhunt by shooting him to save Gibbs. More broadly, Kate's death established the franchise 's defining rule: nobody is safe. Alexander returned in flashbacks in the season 3 opener and again in season 9's "Life Before His Eyes" (2012), an alternate-reality episode imagining the life Kate never got.
Any hard feelings?
None. Alexander landed on her feet, starring in Rizzoli & Isles for seven seasons (2010–2016).
For the record: Lauren Holly was in the running to play Kate before Alexander won the part. When NCIS finally called Holly, it was to play Director Jenny Shepard — who was also killed off.
Some roles are just cursed.
