Why is Ryder not in Landman season 2? The answer runs straight through Ainsley's storyline

If you spent Landman season 2 waiting for Ainsley's himbo quarterback to jog back on screen, I have news, and the news is a two-digit number.

The official (in-show) explanation

Ryder Sampson — played by Mitchell Slaggert, last seen in season 1 being respectful, jacked, and devoted to Texas Tech — is written out in essentially one line of dialogue. During Ainsley's gloriously unhinged TCU admissions interview in the season 2 premiere, she reveals what happened:

• Ryder scored a 17 on his ACT, which is too low for Texas Tech, the school they'd planned to attend together on his football scholarship;
• He enrolled instead at Kilgore College, a junior college in East Texas, hoping to fix his grades and transfer;
• Ainsley, who scored a 29 — a fact the show delivers like a plot twist — pivoted to TCU and its cheer squad, citing a craving for independence;
• Per the Dallas Morning News, the premiere confirms the two broke up, and Ainsley stayed "boy-free" all season.

That's it. No oil rig explosion, no cartel subplot, no dramatic exit. A standardized test did what West Texas couldn't: it took out a Sheridan character.

In the Sheridan-verse, men survive drug lords and drilling accidents, but nobody survives the ACT.

The unofficial (real-world) explanation

There's no reported drama here — no recasting, no feud, no scheduling scandal. Slaggert simply wasn't part of the season 2 story Taylor Sheridan wanted to tell, and the actor has spoken about the gig with the energy of a man who'd return in a heartbeat. As he put it to Cero:

"It was another Taylor Sheridan show, and that guy is just a savant."

Which is not the quote of a man who slammed the door on his way out.

The collateral damage: Ainsley

Here's the twist nobody asked for: removing Ryder arguably removed Ainsley's plot. Screen Rant argued that with her boyfriend written out and college still months away in-story, Ainsley spent season 2 as a peripheral character tagging along on her mother 's adventures, and got noticeably dumber in the process — season 1 Ainsley had schemes; season 2 Ainsley had a ferret-adjacent roommate conflict. Whether Ryder resurfaces in season 3 — or whether Kilgore College is simply where Sheridan characters go to be remembered fondly — remains open. Ainsley's actress is already lobbying for a new love interest, so I wouldn't hold a candle at the vigil.
