Why is Lauren's mom in jail in Ransom Canyon? The sheriff had to arrest his own wife
Ransom Canyon spent its whole first season circling one question — who ran Randall Kirkland off the road? — and the answer detonated two families at once. With season 2 now streaming on Netflix as of July 2026, here's exactly why Lauren's mother is behind bars.
What Margaret did
Margaret Brigman (Sarah Minnich) was drunk behind the wheel on the night she forced Randall (Hubert Smielecki) — rancher Staten Kirkland's teenage son — off the road, causing the crash that killed him. She wasn't alone, either: she was with Kit Russell (Casey W. Johnson), the older brother of her daughter's boyfriend Lucas, with whom she was having an affair behind Sheriff Dan Brigman's back.
Kit helped cover up her involvement and was genuinely willing to go to prison for her. The secret held for years — until it didn't.
The sheriff had to arrest his own wife
When Lauren (Lizzy Greene) finally learnt the truth, she told her father. And because Dan Brigman (Philip Winchester) is the town's sheriff, upholding the law meant putting handcuffs on his own wife — which is exactly what he did in the season 1 finale. Margaret went to prison for Randall's death, and Staten at last had his answer.
The fallout in season 2
- Lauren — carries the weight of her mother 's imprisonment, then suffers a shoulder injury that ends her cheerleading career and, with it, her scholarship ticket out of Ransom.
- Dan — polices a town that watched him arrest his wife, while quietly growing closer to Quinn's sister, Angie.
- Kit — the man who covered for Margaret becomes, awkwardly, the person Lauren leans on most, sparking the season's messiest romance.
- Lucas — catches Lauren and Kit kissing, breaks up with her, and spirals.
Creator April Blair told Deadline in July 2026 the writers' room was split on the Lauren–Kit pairing, but she pushed for it:
"You want it to be messy and complicated," Blair said.
Mission accomplished. The drunken secret that put Margaret in jail is still reshaping the town two seasons on — and if the show based on Jodi Thomas's novels gets a season 3, it isn't done yet.
