Why didn’t Young Sheldon get a Season 8?
Young Sheldon ended after seven seasons with gas still in the tank, and its creators explain why.
When the 2023 Hollywood strikes compressed the show’s timeline, the Young Sheldon brain trust made a call: end on their terms. According to an excerpt from a Jessica Radloff book published by The Hollywood Reporter, the final season, which the team had hoped would run 22 episodes, was cut to 14. On a Zoom with CBS, creators Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and Steve Holland said they’d rather wrap the story while it was still firing — even though the network was game for more.
“Who walks away from that?” Holland said of the stunned reaction — adding that the goal was to leave “when you walk away, when it’s still great, and don’t let it sort of taper off into mediocrity.”
The creative math pushed them there. In canon, George Cooper dies around this point in Sheldon’s life, and Sheldon would soon head to Caltech. Molaro wasn’t interested in making a version of the show without George — or in re-telling Sheldon's California years that The Big Bang Theory had already covered, per the excerpt.
Money-saving tweaks were floated in the post‑strike belt-tightening, but Holland said the team had no appetite for a leaner, cheaper version. Instead, they pitched CBS on a Georgie and Mandy spinoff — a way to keep the universe going without stretching Sheldon’s coming-of-age past its natural endpoint.
The money on the table
Even with the conviction to stop, there was serious cash in play. Pay and net-worth figures cited around the cast are from older reports and estimates (net-worth tallies via Nine.com.au):
- Iain Armitage — earned about $50,000 per episode in seasons 4–5 after a post–season 3 raise; estimated net worth around $5.6 million.
- Annie Potts — estimated net worth north of $11 million, boosted by real-estate investments.
- Montana Jordan — estimated near $3 million.
- Zoe Perry — estimated about $1.1 million.
- Lance Barber — estimated roughly $1 million.
In the end, CBS’s top-rated family comedy finished its run in 2024 after seven seasons, with a final stretch of 14 episodes and a Georgie-and-Mandy spinoff in the pipeline.
