Why did Yang leave Grey's Anatomy — and why has Cristina never come back?
Cristina Yang walked out of Grey Sloan Memorial in the season 10 finale in May 2014, and across the twelve seasons since, she has never once appeared on screen. If that absence still stings, here's the whole story — from Sandra Oh's side and the show's.
Why Sandra Oh left
By her own account, she was creatively finished. Oh had played Cristina since the 2005 premiere, and she announced her exit in August 2013, telling The Hollywood Reporter she'd been weighing the decision since the end of season 8 and admitting,
"I've gone through a lot of therapy over this."
She broke the news to her castmates at the table read for the show's 200th episode. It wasn't a feud, a firing, or a contract dispute — she felt she'd taken the character as far as she could, and chose to close the book herself.
How Cristina left the show
The writers gave her a rare thing in Shondaland: a happy exit. In the season 10 finale, "Fear (of the Unknown)," Preston Burke offers Cristina his position running a cardiovascular research institute in Zurich. She takes it — after one last dance-it-out with Meredith — and leaves Seattle alive, thriving, and at the top of her field.
Why she's never come back
Because Oh has consistently, cheerfully declined. Asked on the Los Angeles Times' Asian Enough podcast in May 2021 about a cameo, her answer was
"Oh my gosh, no. No! No!"
Her career since — Killing Eve, Golden Globe wins, Emmy nominations — gave her every reason to keep moving forward. Marking the show's 20th anniversary with Entertainment Weekly in March 2025, she stood by the choice: "I knew in my gut that I had done as much as I could." She told People in May 2025 she doesn't even watch the show in reruns.
Could Cristina ever return?
The door was deliberately left open. Cristina is alive and running her institute in Zurich, Meredith still references texting her, and the role has never been recast. Even Oh's famous hard no has softened at the edges — in that 2025 anniversary press, she acknowledged how deeply audiences still love the character and said she's happy for the show to use Cristina as it sees fit. With season 22 currently airing, the show keeps that thread alive.
