Why did they kill Lily in Hell on Wheels? Dominique McElligott learned her character's fate only days before filming
Lily Bell carried two full seasons of AMC's Hell on Wheels — the widowed English surveyor's wife who ripped an arrow out of her own shoulder in the pilot and used it on the man who put it there. Then the season 2 finale aired.
She doesn't make it to season 3.
What happens to her
The Swede, played by Christopher Heyerdahl, strangles Lily in her railcar in "Blood Moon Rising," the second half of the two-hour finale broadcast October 7, 2012. It isn't personal toward her. She's leverage: the Swede kills her specifically to gut Cullen Bohannon, who finds the body afterward.
Bohannon's account of the whole thing is told in flashback to a government inquiry.
The actress found out days before
Dominique McElligott didn't get advance warning. Scripts on Hell on Wheels went out to the cast shortly before each shoot, so she learned Lily was being killed the same way she learned everything else about the character — by opening the pages.
"They gave us the script days before each shoot," she told the Irish Independent in 2012.
She added that there were upsides and downsides to working that way. No on-set conflict has ever been reported, and the death read as a planned story reset rather than a falling-out: AMC renewed the show for season 3 within weeks, with creators Joe and Tony Gayton stepping back from day-to-day showrunning.
What the finale left standing
- The town — burned to the ground in a Sioux raid.
- Thomas Durant — in federal custody over the mileage fraud.
- The Swede — thrown from a bridge, and very much alive.
- Bohannon — no railroad, no Lily, and a reason to keep going.
Did fans think she survived?
For a while, yes. Message boards picked apart the details — the candle that never started a fire, the fact that nobody saw a burial, the flashback framing that made Bohannon an unreliable narrator. The theory was that Bohannon had hidden her somewhere safe. She never came back.
McElligott landed on her feet: House of Cards, then Queen Maeve in The Boys. The Swede, meanwhile, lasted until season 5 and outlived almost everyone who was standing in that finale.
