Why did Rollins leave SVU? The exit lasted three years, and Kelli Giddish credits fans with reversing it
Amanda Rollins was written out of SVU at the end of 2022 in a decision the show's lead publicly objected to. Three years later she is back on the payroll full time, and the cast has been unusually blunt about what changed.
Kelli Giddish did not quit. That distinction is the entire story, and it took until May 2025 for the show to formally undo it.
Giddish joined Law & Order: SVU in season 13 in 2011, arriving in the reshuffle that followed Christopher Meloni's departure. She announced in August 2022 that she was leaving, and Amanda Rollins was written out on 8 December 2022, midway through season 24 — married to Carisi, off to teach at Fordham, given a send-off scene with Benson rather than a body bag.
The decision came from above the cast
Giddish learned she was going before season 24 started shooting and worked with producers on the exit storyline. Her public framing at the time was about the character reaching a stopping point.
"Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life," Giddish said in her August 2022 departure statement, marking 12 years in the franchise.
Mariska Hargitay was considerably less diplomatic when Variety asked her about it in 2024. She confirmed she had lobbied against the decision and lost, and that Dick Wolf made the final call.
"Kelli is my favorite actor to work with. Kelli is my heart. It's a sore subject," Hargitay told Variety in 2024, adding: "I have a lot of say on the show, but I didn't have enough there... I don't like not being listened to, especially when I'm right."
She also described Benson and Rollins as "one of the most powerful relationships in television" — the working argument for why removing one half of it was a mistake.

What happened in the gap
Rollins never fully left the building. Across seasons 25 and 26 Giddish came back six separate times as a guest, keeping the character in circulation while the show moved on without her:
- The marriage — Rollins stayed married to Carisi, who remained a series regular as an ADA, which gave the writers a standing reason to bring her back.
- The teaching job — the Fordham position kept her in New York and out of the squad room.
- The guest run — six appearances over two seasons, enough to keep the character's status current.
- The promotion — she returned in season 27 as a sergeant, commanding the NYPD's Intelligence Unit rather than working under Benson.
That last detail matters. Rollins did not come back to her old desk; she came back outranking the position she left.
Who gets the credit
Deadline broke the news in May 2025 that Giddish would be a series regular for season 27, which ran from 25 September 2025 to 14 May 2026 across 21 episodes under Michele Fazekas, the first woman to run the show. Ice-T has been direct about the mechanics of it.
"No one really expected her to leave the show. We got blindsided by that," Ice-T told TVLine in 2025. "But the fans said they wanted to see Kelli back, so she's coming back."
For the record: the exit statement in 2022 and the return announcement in 2025 both came from the same network, about the same actor, in the same role. Nothing in between changed except the volume of complaints.
