Why did Reacher's brother die? Joe's murder is what starts the whole story
Reacher opens with Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher stepping off a bus in tiny Margrave, Georgia, and getting arrested for murder within minutes of ordering peach pie. The victim, he soon learns at the morgue, is his own older brother, Joe — identified by a childhood scar on his hand.
Why Joe was in that town, and who pulled the trigger, is the engine of the entire first season, which hit Prime Video on February 4, 2022, adapting Lee Child's 1997 debut novel Killing Floor. Here's the full story.
Why Joe was in Margrave
Joe Reacher was a federal investigator working for the Secret Service, and he'd traced a massive counterfeiting operation to Margrave. The Kliner Foundation — the charity that bankrolled the whole town — was a front for printing fake $100 bills and smuggling them out through Venezuela.
Joe's way in was Paul Hubble, a local money manager inside the scheme who'd called a federal tip line. Operating under the alias Mark Salas, Joe offered Hubble immunity for evidence and pulled in a Kliner trucker, Pete Jobling, to help deliver it.
He was days from blowing the operation open. That's why he died: to bury the investigation before it surfaced. The clue that cracks it? Hubble's phone number, folded up inside Joe's shoe.
Who actually killed him
Three men were at the scene that night, and the season finale, "Pie," lays out exactly who did what:
- KJ (Kliner Jr.) — the triggerman. He shot Joe and calmly collected his own bullet casings. He later murdered his father too, deciding the old man lacked the stomach to protect the business.
- Dawson — KJ's unhinged friend, who beat Joe's body after he was already dead.
- Chief Morrison — the crooked local police chief on the Kliner payroll, who hurriedly hid the body. He and his wife were later killed for failing to keep the mess contained.
KJ confesses it all to Reacher's face in the finale. He does not survive the conversation.
The coincidence
Reacher wasn't in Margrave looking for Joe — he had no idea his brother was there. He'd wandered into town on a whim, chasing a piece of blues trivia Joe had once mentioned: that guitarist Blind Blake supposedly died in Margrave. Two brothers, drawn to the same dot on the map for completely different reasons, and only one walked out.
How Reacher says goodbye
After burning the counterfeiting warehouse to the ground with everyone responsible inside, Reacher makes one last stop before leaving town. At the spot where Joe was killed, he buries the World War II French bravery medal that belonged to their grandfather — the only possession he carries.
Then he gets back on the road. It's what Joe would have expected.
