Why did Rachel leave Suits? The writers knew a year before the rest of the world did

It was planned. Showrunner Aaron Korsh had been quietly writing toward Rachel's exit since late 2016, before the engagement, before the announcement, before anyone asked Markle what her plans were.

Korsh made the call before Markle did

Markle and Harry started dating in 2016. Cast and crew knew early, and once Harry began visiting the Toronto set, the security footprint made the situation hard to ignore. Korsh decided not to put his actress on the spot about it.

"I knew from a year ago that this relationship was burgeoning," Korsh told BBC Radio 4's Today programme in November 2017.

So the writers took a bet. They built the season on the assumption Rachel would be gone by the end of it, reasoning that it's far easier to undo a written exit than to be caught flat-footed if she walked. Korsh has said he'd rather good things happen in Markle's life, even at the cost of a character.

How they wrote Rachel out

• The wedding — Rachel marries Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) in the season 7 finale, closing a slow-burn romance that started in the pilot.
• The move — the two leave Manhattan for Seattle to run a legal clinic filing class actions against Fortune 500 companies.
• The two-for-one — Adams was also exiting as a regular, so one storyline cleared two seats.
• The open door — Korsh has said he'd have taken Rachel back at any point. Nobody called.

Markle's engagement to Harry was announced on November 27, 2017, five months before her final episode aired. Rachel Zane remains her last acting credit.

Did she ever come back?

No. Suits ran two more seasons and ended in September 2019. Adams returned for a guest arc as Mike in season 9. Rachel stayed in Seattle, referenced but unseen.

The part nobody saw coming

Four years after the finale, Suits landed on Netflix in June 2023 and became the biggest thing on television. It topped Nielsen's streaming chart for 12 consecutive weeks, passing Ozark's record, and racked up roughly 57.7 billion minutes of viewing across 2023.

NBC responded with a spinoff. Suits LA premiered in February 2025 with Stephen Amell as an entertainment lawyer, brought back Gabriel Macht's Harvey Specter in support, opened to 2.6 million viewers, and was canceled on May 9, 2025 — nine days before its own season finale aired. That's two Suits spinoffs killed after one season each, counting 2019's Pearson.

For the record: Rachel didn't pass the LSAT until season 2, episode 9. It took her six more years to make partner-adjacent, marry, and leave the country — all before the show became a phenomenon she had no part in.
