Why did NCIS kill off Director Vance? It wasn't Rocky Carroll's call
NCIS has lost plenty of characters over 23 seasons, but until this year it had never buried a main cast member with this much finality. Then came episode 500.
If you're wondering why the show killed off Director Vance — and whether Rocky Carroll wanted out — here's what actually happened.
The short answer
Vance died in "All Good Things," the 500th episode, which aired March 24, 2026. It wasn't Carroll's decision to leave. Showrunner Steven D. Binder pitched the death, and CBS and the studio backed it — they wanted something huge for the milestone episode. Carroll had played Vance for 18 seasons.
How Vance dies
The episode opens with NCIS being shut down and folded into Army CID. The fallout scatters the team:
- McGee and Knight — take positions at Army CID.
- Parker — refuses his offer and retires.
- Torres — walks away and joins the DEA.
- Vance — keeps digging, and uncovers the weapons smuggling operation behind the shutdown.
Those responsible try to blow up the building to destroy the evidence. Vance defuses the bomb — then a dirty Army CID agent shoots him three times in the chest. McGee and Parker arrive too late. As he dies, a young Ducky (played by NCIS: Origins star Adam Campbell) guides him toward the light, and the voice of his late wife Jackie welcomes him. Vance saved the agency. It cost him his life.
Carroll pushed back at first
Carroll learned his fate in November 2025 and shot his final scene on December 11. His first reaction was a rebuttal, which he described to E! News in 2026:
"We lose characters all the time, but we sent Gibbs off to Alaska."
Fair point — Mark Harmon's Gibbs got a quiet exit, not a body bag. But the producers explained they wanted to remind the world why NCIS is one of the most watched shows on the planet, and once Carroll read the script, he came around. He told Variety in March 2026 that after 23 years of stories, this one struck him as genuinely terrific — and that actors love dying on camera anyway.
Is he really gone?
Vance is dead, but Carroll isn't going anywhere. He's a frequent NCIS director and had already returned behind the camera for a season 23 episode before his death scene even aired. He's also floated the flashback route for a return — this is a franchise that had David McCallum's Ducky reappear as a younger self, after all.
Carroll joined NCIS in season 5, back in 2008, and racked up 392 episodes. Not bad for a role that was originally meant to be recurring.
