Why did Matthew leave Downton Abbey? The exit aired on Christmas Day — and the backlash made front pages
Matthew Crawley survives the Somme, temporary paralysis, and the influenza pandemic that killed his fiancée. He does not survive the drive home from the hospital where his son had just been born.
That scene aired in the U.K. on Christmas Day 2012, and it happened because Dan Stevens wanted out. His initial contract ran three years, he declined to extend it, and Julian Fellowes wrote the crash.
The contract ran out
Stevens has been consistent about the reason for a decade. He told The Telegraph the series was a very monopolizing job
and that he wanted room for other work. Speaking to Deadline in 2022, he framed the choice as a straight trade — more money and the same part for another decade, or an open field. He picked the field.
He added a second motive in a 2021 interview with The Australian: he was worried about being permanently typecast as a romantic lead if he stayed.
The Christmas Day problem
The timing was not his call. Viewers who had sat down after Christmas dinner watched Matthew die in a car wreck minutes after meeting his son, and the complaints ran through the papers and social media for days. Stevens apologized to Radio Times, noting he had no say in how the character went:
"You're not supposed to die on British television on Christmas Day."
He did defend the choice of exit itself, arguing that killing Matthew was better than the alternative on the table — sending him off to have an affair, which he thought would have been wrong for the character.
Fellowes tried to buy him back
The show's creator wanted one more episode. He told the Express in 2013 that he'd pushed for a brief return so Matthew and Mary could get a happier sendoff, and got nowhere:
"Dan would not stay — he was determined to go."
Season 4 instead rebuilt itself around a widowed Lady Mary running the estate, which is roughly the show Fellowes had wanted to make anyway.
Did he ever come back?
No. Stevens sat out all three films — the 2019 original, A New Era in 2022, and The Grand Finale, released September 12, 2025 — and has said he's regularly surprised by fans who don't realize he wasn't in the first one either.
For the record: the crash was staged well enough that some viewers assumed Matthew survived offscreen. The show never entertained it.
