Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner disappeared from Criminal Minds in season 12 with barely a goodbye, and on screen it was pinned on "creative differences."

The real reason played out off camera: an on-set incident that got Thomas Gibson fired after 11 seasons as the BAU's unit chief. Here's what happened.

The incident that ended it

In August 2016, while directing an episode of Criminal Minds, Gibson got into an altercation with writer-producer Virgil Williams over a line in the script. It turned physical — Gibson kicked Williams. He was suspended for two episodes, and days later ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios confirmed he was out.

Gibson's side of it

Gibson framed the row as creative differences and expressed regret, saying he'd hoped to see the show through to the end. He later gave People and Us Weekly a more detailed account, disputing the idea that he'd violently kicked anyone — he said his foot "came up and tapped [Williams] on the leg," and that Williams had been coming towards him at the time.

The wider pattern

Reports at the time suggested the 2016 clash wasn't a one-off. According to Variety and others, the studios' decision was shaped by a history behind the scenes:

  • A 2010 incident — Gibson reportedly shoved assistant director Ian Woolf and was sent to anger-management classes; some staff were unhappy he wasn't let go then.
  • A "volatile" reputation — industry sources described him as quick to anger and, at times, verbally abusive to cast and crew.
  • On-set tension — reportedly a strained relationship with co-star Shemar Moore, plus friction over scheduling around his commute to San Antonio.
  • A 2013 DUI arrest — for driving through a barricade on a marathon-cordoned street in downtown Los Angeles.

Some people who'd worked with Gibson said they never witnessed the behaviour others described. Either way, the studios acted fast.

How Hotch was written out

With Gibson gone and unavailable to film, showrunner Erica Messer had to explain the captain's absence. Hotch was said to be away on temporary duty, then written into the Witness Protection Program to shield himself and his son Jack from serial killer Mr Scratch — ultimately choosing to step back and be a full-time father rather than return to the BAU. His last real appearance was in season 12, with a brief flashback in the season 15 finale.

For the record: when Criminal Minds returned as Criminal Minds: Evolution, Hotch didn't come with it. Eleven seasons in the captain's chair, and no way back through the door.
