Why did Elena leave The Vampire Diaries? Nina Dobrev's exit had been brewing for a while
For six seasons, Nina Dobrev was The Vampire Diaries — playing both Elena Gilbert and her doppelgänger Katherine Pierce since the show's 2009 premiere. Then, in April 2015, she announced she was done. Here's why — and what happened to Elena on screen.
It was always the plan
Dobrev's exit wasn't a blowup. She had signed on for six seasons, and when that contract ended, she chose not to renew. In her Instagram announcement on April 6, 2015, she explained the decision had been made long before:
"I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure."
She was 20 when the show started and 26 when she left — and she wanted out while the show was still on top, with time to build a film career. It worked: she went on to xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) and a string of movie roles.
What about the Ian Somerhalder thing?
Fans speculated for years. Dobrev and Somerhalder (Damon) dated in real life from roughly 2011 to 2013, then split — and she had to keep playing his love interest for two more seasons. Both have insisted the breakup wasn't the reason she left, and Dobrev later called the "feud" rumors nonsense. Awkward? Probably. The cause? By every account she's given, no.
How Elena was written out
The season 6 finale, "I'm Thinking of You All the While" (May 14, 2015), left the door open rather than killing her off:
- Kai's spell — the villain Kai linked Elena's life to Bonnie's. Elena falls into a magical coma that only ends when Bonnie dies.
- The goodbye — Elena gets farewell scenes with the whole cast, then is sealed away in a coffin.
- The setup — Damon vows to wait decades, however long it takes.
Clean exit. Open door.
Did she come back?
Yes — for exactly one episode. Dobrev returned for the series finale, "I Was Feeling Epic " (March 10, 2017), playing both Elena and Katherine one last time. Elena wakes, reunites with Damon, and the two live out a full human life together.
For the record: across the series, Dobrev played not just Elena and Katherine but every Petrova doppelgänger the writers could dream up — including Amara, the original one, roughly 2,000 years old.
