Why did Aaron leave The Rookie? It wasn't the actor's choice
When The Rookie returned for season 7 in January 2025, roll call at Mid-Wilshire was missing a familiar face. Aaron Thorsen — social media star turned LAPD officer, played by Tru Valentino since season 4 — was gone, written out with a single line of dialogue. And no, this wasn't a case of an actor chasing a bigger gig.
The show made the call
TVLine confirmed on August 8, 2024, that Valentino would not return for season 7 — news that landed after fans noticed his absence from the show's San Diego Comic-Con panel. The decision came from the producers, not the actor. Showrunner Alexi Hawley addressed it in a January 2025 ScreenRant interview, explaining it felt like, "creatively, for where the show was going, that we needed to pivot a bit."
Valentino's own reaction, posted to his social media, was gracious but telling — he thanked the fans, called the role an amazing opportunity, and signed off with a hint:
"You never know who may pop back up in the Mid-Wilshire precinct."
How the show explained it
Quickly. In the season 7 premiere, "The Shot" (January 7, 2025), Celina mentions in passing that Aaron transferred to the LAPD's North Hollywood division — a fresh start where nobody knows he was a patient of Dr. Blair London, the corrupt therapist who spent season 6 secretly feeding his sessions to villain Monica Stevens.
Who Aaron was
Three seasons of heavy material, for the record:
- The backstory — son of a rapper and a reality TV star, famous on the show's "ClipTok" app with 4 million followers.
- The scandal — wrongly accused of murdering his best friend Patrick Hayes while studying in Paris; he spent over a year in prison before being acquitted.
- The badge — he sued the LAPD just to get into the academy, then trained under Nyla Harper and John Nolan.
- The trauma — shot in the season 5 finale, then manipulated by his own therapist in season 6.
Could he come back?
The door is open. Aaron is alive in the show's universe, Hawley has said he'd happily have Valentino back in some capacity, and the character has already been name-checked on screen since. His exit made room for two new rookies — Miles (Deric Augustine) and Seth (Patrick Keleher) — and the show has been renewed for season 8.
