Who killed the uncle in A Shop for Killers?
For seven and a half episodes, this is the question the whole show dangles in front of you. Jeong Jin-man — ex-mercenary, secret arms dealer, devoted uncle — is found dead in his bathtub, throat cut, ruled a suicide. His niece Ji-an doesn't buy it for a second.
She's right not to.
The short answer
Nobody killed him. The season 1 finale of A Shop for Killers (Disney+ and Hulu, February 7, 2024) reveals that Jin-man — played by Lee Dong-wook — staged his own death. The battered-but-breathing uncle steps out of a taxi in the final scene, very much alive.
Jeong-min's confession
Before that reveal, the show hands you a killer: Bae Jeong-min, Ji-an's supposed friend and the shop's part-time hacker. He gleefully claims credit, showing Ji-an a pen drive and explaining how he did it. Working with the mercenary group Babylon, he played Jin-man an AI- generated recording of Ji-an's voice — fake proof she'd been captured. Jin-man listened to it over and over, sent Babylon a message demanding they honor their promise to spare her, walked into the bathroom, and cut his own throat.
That's Jeong-min's version. He believed it. Babylon believed it. The police believed it.
The clues that it was staged
Rewatch the season and the setup is everywhere:
- The wound — Jin-man slit his throat, not his wrists. As a career mercenary, he knew exactly how deep a cut could bleed convincingly without killing him.
- No witnesses — neither the house cameras nor Jeong-min's pen camera actually captured the moment of death.
- The detective — the officer who had Ji-an identify the body at the morgue is the same man who helps a wounded Jin-man out of the taxi in the finale. The autopsy was an inside job.
- The debt call — right before "dying," Jin-man phoned his old comrade Pasin to cancel his debt. It was a signal to protect Ji-an.
Why fake it at all?
Strategy. With Jin-man "dead," Babylon's killers converged on the house and the underground weapons mall, Murthehelp — all his enemies in one place, facing a niece he'd spent years secretly training. Ji-an survived the siege, killed the assassin Lee Seong-jo, and took over the shop. Which, it turns out, was the plan.
So the real answer to "who killed the uncle" is: the uncle. And he made sure it didn't take.
