Who is Gary in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe?
The Big Bang Theory spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premiered on HBO Max on July 23, 2026, and its very first episode title pulls a prank on the audience: "Spoiler: Gary Dies." Which raises the obvious question for anyone who watched all 279 episodes of the original show. Who on earth is Gary?
The short answer
Gary is a brand-new character, not a Big Bang Theory holdover. Played by Tommy Walker, he's the post-apocalyptic boyfriend of Denise (Lauren Lapkus), Stuart's ex — a jockish, good-natured former Army Special Forces soldier who teams up with Stuart and Bert on their mission to break into CalTech and fix the broken universe.
And yes. The title keeps its promise.
How Gary dies
The show wastes no time. During the CalTech break-in, Gary volunteers to draw the guards' fire so the others can slip in a side entrance — charges forward with a heroic "Follow me!" — and is instantly cut down in a hail of bullets.
It 's played as a quick, almost meaningless death, which is exactly the joke the episode title set up.
The premiere then tops it with a much bigger shock: Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), imprisoned at CalTech for years, is shot dead by warlord Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie) seconds before he can repair the quantum device. Creators Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn addressed the killing of an original Big Bang character directly:
"Well, he's only gone in this one universe," Lorre and Prady told Deadline in July 2026.
Why Gary keeps coming back
That multiverse logic applies to Gary too — and it's become a running gag. Each episode drops Stuart, Denise, Bert, and Kripke into a new alternate reality, and each reality seems to have its own Gary:
- Episode 1 — post-apocalyptic Gary, Denise's bandit boyfriend, killed at CalTech.
- Episode 2 — a parallel-universe Gary who's happily married to that reality's Denise, complicating Stuart's plans to win her back.
- Beyond that — the various Garys keep meeting increasingly gruesome ends across the season.
Poor guy. His only crime is dating Denise after Stuart did.
Do I need to know Big Bang lore?
It helps but isn't required. The show follows alternate versions of Stuart (Kevin Sussman), Denise, Bert (Brian Posehn), and Kripke after a quantum-interference device built by Sheldon and Leonard shatters reality, with legacy cameos woven in along the way — Penn & Teller turn up in the premiere as street performers busking for food.
Fun fact: the animated opening credits change every episode and always end with a spoiler for the hour ahead.
