Which NCIS characters were on JAG? More agents crossed over than you remember
NCIS didn't start as NCIS. It started as two episodes of JAG in the spring of 2003 — a backdoor pilot that smuggled an entire cast onto someone else's show. And more familiar faces were in those episodes than most fans remember.
The backdoor pilot
The episodes are "Ice Queen" and "Meltdown," airing April 22 and 29, 2003, as episodes 20 and 21 of JAG's eighth season, both written by franchise creator Donald P. Bellisario with Don McGill. The story: NCIS investigates the murder of pregnant Navy Lieutenant Loren Singer — and arrests JAG's own hero, Harmon "Harm" Rabb Jr., as the prime suspect, with "Meltdown" covering his trial.
Every NCIS character who appeared
- Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) — fully formed from minute one: coffee, stare, and all.
- Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) — already cracking jokes over a corpse.
- Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) — the goth forensic scientist arrived complete with the lab.
- Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum) — examining the body a Boy Scout's stray arrow found.
- Director Tom Morrow (Alan Dale) — the first NCIS director, present before the show existed.
- Vivian Blackadder (Robyn Lively) — the agent you've forgotten, and for good reason.
The agent who didn't make the jump
Blackadder is the crossover's great trivia answer. She worked the Singer case alongside Gibbs and DiNozzo, but when NCIS proper premiered on September 23, 2003 — just five months later — she was gone without explanation, replaced by Sasha Alexander's Caitlin Todd. Six characters crossed over; five survived the trip.
There's a seventh name worth knowing: Alicia Coppola's JAG lawyer Faith Coleman debuted in "Meltdown" and then crossed the other way, appearing in three episodes of NCIS across seasons 1 and 2.
Traffic went both ways
JAG kept visiting its spinoff for years. Patrick Labyorteaux's Lt. Bud Roberts popped up on NCIS, and John M. Jackson's Rear Admiral A.J. Chegwidden returned in the season 10 finale, "Damned If You Do," as Gibbs' legal counsel. David James Elliott's Harm and Catherine Bell's Mac even reunited in the NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 finale in 2019.
For the record: NBC canceled JAG after one season back in 1996. CBS rescued it — and that rescue eventually produced a franchise spanning roughly 50 seasons of television.
Not bad for a castoff.
