The Hat Creek outfit rides out of a dusty border settlement that has never existed anywhere in Texas. Here's where Larry McMurtry found the name, what the fictional town is built out of, and the ranch where CBS constructed the version you've watched.

There is no Lonesome Dove, Texas, and there never was. There is, however, a Lonesome Dove Baptist Church, and McMurtry got the whole novel out of reading its name off the side of a bus.

The church was founded in 1846 and still stands in Southlake, about 25 miles from Fort Worth. McMurtry, stalled on his writing for years, spotted the name painted on a church bus while eating at the Ponder Steakhouse, decided it would make a great title, went home and started the preface in 1985. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year.

The town in the book

Lonesome Dove in the novel is a small, sun-flattened settlement on the Rio Grande in South Texas, the kind of place where the Hat Creek Cattle Company and Livery Emporium can advertise services nobody wants. It is composed rather than copied. McMurtry's geography draws on Southlake, Weatherford and Fort Worth, none of which are border towns, and no single real settlement serves as the model.

That matters for anyone planning a pilgrimage. You can visit the church. You cannot visit the town.

What CBS built outside Del Rio

The 1989 miniseries put the town on the Bill Moody Ranch, seven miles south of Del Rio — a real border town on the Rio Grande, across from Ciudad Acuña. The ranch ran to 56,000 acres and offered mesquite, hackberry, prickly pear, guajillo and cenizo, which is to say it already looked like the book.

What the production added, per Texas Monthly's set report, was about a dozen buildings of adobe and faded lumber on a single street. A leftover set from the miniseries Houston: The Legend of Texas was rebuilt on the same ranch as a Colorado River scene with a dock and a boat.

"The thing I keep preaching to everybody is that Lonesome Dove is the star. If we take care of Lonesome Dove, it'll take care of us," screenwriter and executive producer Bill Wittliff said during production.

Shooting began in April 1988 and ran 90 days on a $20 million budget, directed by Simon Wincer, with 89 speaking parts and as many as 1,400 head of cattle. Local ranch hands were paid $10 a day to train horses for the remuda scenes and $20 a day during filming, according to foreman Charley Helms.

The other Texas addresses

  • Alamo Village, Brackettville — the standing set John Wayne built for The Alamo in 1960, used here for 1870s San Antonio.
  • Contrabando, Redford — a ghost town on the Rio Grande in far West Texas.
  • Ranches across Texas and New Mexico — covering the drive north through Nebraska and into Montana.
  • The Wittliff Collections, Texas State University — where the props, costumes and Wittliff's papers ended up, and where you can still see the Hat Creek sign.

The miniseries aired over four nights on CBS, February 5 to 8, 1989, ran 384 minutes, and took seven Emmys from 18 nominations.

Someone is building it again

Netflix ordered a new Lonesome Dove straight to series in September 2026, with Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart as co-showrunners and Teton Ridge Entertainment producing — Gus and Call, the Rio Grande, Montana, the same last drive. No casting and no filming location announced yet. The Moody Ranch set is long gone, so whoever takes the job gets to build the town from nothing a second time.
